Storm Floris is currently causing over 50% of the UK’s electricity needs to come from wind power.

  1. It’s a windy day! The turbine near our office looks like it’s about to take off.

  2. Over 70% renewable (not counting nuclear) is great going!

  3. I can’t believe we’re not burning any Belgium’s at all, not even one.

  4. While it’s a fluke event, this shows how insane it is to tie leccy costs to the most expensive fuel. today could almost be a free day of leccy for everyone.

  5. It amuses me that ‘Denmark’ and ‘Belgium’ are energy sources

  6. Isn’t this the sort of weather where they have to put the brakes on the turbines to stop them destroying themselves?

  7. Are we sure that it’s not the turbines creating the wind? They have all been turned up too high!

  8. Just not the notification from octopus that we’ve got free leccy tomorrow, time to batch cook some oven meals.

  9. More climate change = more storms = more wind = more wind energy!

  10. Got my 1 hour of free electricity from Octopus. How exciting.

  11. Just sad we’re still paying the gas rate on the consumer level!

  12. So the unit price of electricity will come down right? Right? Lol

  13. Now imagine we actually owned the seabeds and could build even more turbines instead of the crown estate auctioning it off

  14. Prob why electric is free with octopus for a bit tomorrow.

  15. And it will get higher, I just fed my kids baked beans

  16. While it’s not as easy to read and not good on mobile, I prefer this –

    More details basically.

Demand is pretty low, but that’s saying nearly 46% from wind, which is mighty impressive.

Solar is showing as nearly 6GW, just over 17% of demand, which is impressive too.

    1.3% from hydro too.

When you tot up the clean energy (wind, nuclear, hydro, solar, plus France and Norway which will mainly be hydro and nuclear) that’s **82% of our energy production not developing any emissions or carbon at all**.

Shame we still rely so much on gas in winter, and shame that Drax’s “biomass” thing is a bit of a scam.

  17. One day, we may hope to eliminate the most heinous source of power, France.

  18. The energy transformation is such a good UK success story!

  19. This is such a cool app. (I won’t download it myself, because I am a techno-dinosaur, but I appreciate OP who will point out these interesting times for us. Thank you!)

  20. Coal = 0 and top3 are all totally green. pretty cool.

  21. Why is dioxide so hard to say. Poor old carbon getting the rap every time.

  22. Awesome! It makes me feel so much better about my electric costing upwards of 31pp per kWh plus a standing charge each day!

  23. What’s your favourite kind of energy generation? Oh, nuclear? Okay, my favourite is Belgium.

  24. My wheelie bins got knocked over and the neighbours fence blew down

  25. [National Grid Live](https://grid.iamkate.com/) has a great breakdown of UK power use and generation. Wind was over 70% at one point today, wholesale prices went below zero to lower than -£5 per Mwh

  26. One of the best successes this country has had over the past couple decades is the switch to renewable energy, shame it’s not talked about more

  27. Still burning gas, therefore our energy prices are determined by the high price of gas (marginal pricing).
