The arrests were made as part of “inspection, policing, and anti-crime actions, with a special focus on the main nightlife venues in the municipality of Albufeira,” which took place between July 30th and August 4th, according to the GNR.
These operations aim to “prevent and suppress illegal behaviour, as part of operational strengthening aimed at promoting public safety and tranquillity.”

Security in Albufeira has been in focus in recent weeks, with reports of disturbances caused by tourists. Although the city council denies any increase in crime, it believes that crime statistics per population do not reflect the population growth, which can quadruple in the summer due to visitors.
Last week, the Albufeira City Council announced that it would deploy 40 additional GNR officers to the municipality, aimed at increasing security in one of the country’s top tourist destinations, following a request from the city council to the government.
