Preparations were underway in Japan’s Hiroshima on Tuesday, just one day of ahead of a major memorial ceremony marking 80 years since the atomic bombing of the city.

Workers made final touches to the venue at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park where the ceremony is scheduled to be held on Wednesday.

The uranium bomb dropped on Hiroshima instantly killed about 78,000 people and by the end of 1945, the number of dead, including from radiation exposure, reached about 140,000. The US dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945.
