EA Previews new video game Battlefield 6 in Paris : A Fantasy of War ? • FRANCE 24 English
That gun fake. That soldier an actor. Both of them are props to Fet the announcement that the popular first person shooter Battlefield will see a new addition to the series October 10th. To mark the occasion in Paris, the video games company Electronic Arts invited journalists and influencers to test Battlefield 6 in a stark concrete hall full of PCs. Like the soldier, the game features realistic graphics and destructible environments where whole buildings can be destroyed with rocket launchers. Real or not, it’s the fantasy of war that is attractive to players. According to game designers, being able to be in a jet, jump out of it, launch a rocket at an enemy jet, and get back into yours is clearly not something that’s realistic, but it’s something that’s extremely fun and has been a part of the DNA of Battlefield from the start. That fantasy strikes a chord in today’s political climate. The plot of Battlefield 6 takes place in 2027 where the United States and its allies are fighting against a private army called the Pax Armada alongside several European former NATO countries. According to designers, any resemblance to current events is unintentional. One of the next we created all this a few years ago or at least we started the basics a few years ago. So if there are things that are very similar today, it’s more coincidence. I would say the aim was really to be authentic. We wanted an authentic context for better immersion and a better experience in the end for the players. An autumn launch sets the stage for a showdown with competitor games company Blizzard Activision, which will release a new Call of Duty this year, though a date has not yet been announced. Time will tell, but stakes are high for the Battlefield series edition as its sales have not met expectations previously.
