    Yet here we are with a sizable number of governments in favour of it including our own.

  5. The EU isn’t going to ban private messages. The proposal is the allow the scanning of messages prior to encryption to detect images of child sexual abuse. Even this isn’t guaranteed to pass since neither all member states or the European Court of human rights support the proposal for various reasons.

  8. Politics aside, how would this actually work in practice? If the goal is for messaging apps to carry out client side scanning before encrypting a message, what would stop someone from just encrypting their message with something like PGP first before pasting it into the message app and hitting send?

    It doesn’t seem like this would actually stop the ability for people to communicate privately, but instead just force people into extra steps in order to do so. Which I suspect is the actual goal here – e.g make it inconvenient enough for the average person and hope the majority of the public just silently accepts this gross violation of privacy due to the convenience factor.

    They won’t search messages before you send it.

    But the police/gardai/interpol will be able to summons the information.
    Or get access by court approval .

    Like they had with post and telephones before.

  17. So to give you perspective, social media company scanned user messages to proactively detect CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material), there’s a certain indicators that would flag this kind of conversation.

    Human mods will then review this to confirm (and in many cases, report the content to authorities). This is proactive, meaning, system goes into the inbox. Per the EU law, whatever law it is, it is a breach and there’s no consent for this. So social media has to stop this proactive works (and wait for it to be reported). But no child will report this kind of thing cause they are being groomed.

    The revival is to allow this proactive works. Which in my opinion, is very important work.

    Whether you believe the EU’s intentions or not, the article is just outright alarmist and loaded in its framing and is deliberately misleading. It provides no quotes or reference to any supporters of the legislation.

    It’s intentionally painting the EU in bad light and again, anonymous authors and editorial team.

  21. shoot me but i would unironically be all for this, and i’m saying this as a tech/computer science graduate hence someone who spends a lot of time online

    **complete** anonymity is not a natural human thing. it has lead to some crazy repurcussions in the last decade or two. weirdos thinking that their weird interest is actually normal due to finding others online, bigots not getting any karma for their actions, etc.

    on top of that, people just don’t hang out near as much as they used to due to the internet which leads to loneliness, pubs/restaurants closing, and everything else that comes from that. if the only way to talk in privacy was to meet up, it would promote actually meeting up.

    in short, the long term upsides outweigh the downsides imo. could talk much more about this. expecting downvotes, but that’s just the redditor sample bias.

Apparently from what I’ve read , it’s a law change called “chat control” to get Messaging platforms like WhatsApp , signal and telegram to scan all messages for references to child sexual abuse before the messages are encrypted. Critics are saying it effectively ends all encryption and could be abused to create a mass surveillance system.
