What do Welsh people think about Plaid Cymru on their 100th birthday? | YouGov

  1. This is a pretty good showing, really. It shows that there’s a strong base for Plaid Cymru to potentially tap into.

52% of people in Wales think that Plaid Cymru is the best party that would stand up for Wales. That’s pretty good going. One interesting figure was that 25%(!) of Reform UK voters think Plaid Cymru is the party that would stand up for Wales best. Only 17% of Labour voters think Labour is the best party for standing up to Wales – but 60% of them think Plaid is!

Its favourability ratings and the fact that a majority of people in Wales think they’re the best party to stand up for Wales makes for excellent messaging. There are some issues, especially with the NHS, environment, and the economy, but the poll makes for a largely good reading for Plaid. Although it should also be said that “no party” was the most favourable “party” for a fair few of the issues…

But it makes for good birthday vibes, I think. Could do better in some places, but with some very nice headline figures that will make for a great narrative.

  2. When it comes to talk of independance and a vision for Wales I can get behind that and I do like to vote for a party that has Wales at front and center, however, I know your all going to groan but the progressive wokey clap trap they come out with just devalues the good points for me and makes me wonder if they could be trusted with running an independant country.

  3. They’re the best for Wales clearly – not perfect and a bit too woke but Labour are crooks Tories are dead Lib Dems insipid and Reform just plain evil. Plaid’s heart is for the people of Wales at least and our only hope for independence

  4. So will other political parties get special birthday programmes on BBC Wales or is Plaid just different somehow?

  5. Most voters in Wales don’t give a toss about the perceived importance of the Welsh language, despite what the great and the good of Ty Hywel think.

Jobs. NHS. Immigration. Dog shit. Parking. In no particular order.

  6. Plaid have got my vote. By all metrics, they currently have a bunch of highly competent and credible MSs ripe for government, they’ve shown their positive case for Wales in the legislation they’ve managed to get on the statute book in Wales and in Westminster. They would be excellent in government and in running our country for everyone living in Wales. It’s high time we put ourselves first, and fight our corner when needed.

  7. If they dropped the ridiculous idea of Welsh Independence, they’d probably win every single seat in Wales, as a party focused on just making the lives of Welsh people the best it can be.

  8. So long as their policy is for an independent Wales, I shall never consider them for my vote

  9. Currently the best for Wales of course (not a hard bar to beat though), but they need to diversify and understand Wales better.

The candidates for the most recent leadership election was somewhat eye-opening to me. On the bill: Rhun, Delyth, Elin, Heledd, Mabon, Cefin, Peredur, Sioned, Siân and one token Luke – many of those names you would not really come across day to day outside of maybe Gwynedd (and to be honest some were completely new to me) – it’s just not really reflective of modern day Wales as a whole where there’s a much greater mix of names (more common Welsh names, English, from other cultures etc).

Granted they could only pick from current politicians, who do come from heavier Welsh speaking areas, but they need to find a way to have a bit of a broader church. It does give the impression to people new to the party that all the politicians are a bit distant, coming from the same neck of the woods, or that its an “exclusive club”.

  10. I’m glad they’ve brought some sensibility back to the party and aren’t running on independence.

I did some work with the party for a short time while Price was leader, and quite honestly, it was outrageous, I could feel the toxicity, and what felt like subservience to Price.

Granted, he was a charismatic guy, but he essentially developed a cult around him. He was a populist. I do see a lot of Price in Rhun, unfortunately.

Not to mention the fantasy world they were living in, the 2021 manifesto was a joke

  11. Their policy on immigration and independence is an absolute disaster
