The Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC) has started and is currently continuing an epidemiological investigation into an outbreak of presumptive salmonellosis in a kindergarten in Valmiera from 28 July, the SPKC confirmed to LETA.
A total of 30 cases in 29 children and one adult have been detected in the institution. Contact persons have also been identified, and testing has been carried out.
The SPKC has made recommendations to the institution concerned, while also informing the Food and Veterinary Service, the Health Inspectorate and the family doctors of the children involved in the outbreak.
SPKC is currently awaiting full laboratory results, but preliminary results indicate that an outbreak of salmonellosis has occurred in the establishment.
According to the SPKC, most of the children are now starting to recover from the illness. Five of them had been hospitalised in a local health facility and all children have now been discharged from hospital, according to information available to SPKC.
