El Salvador’s parliament approves reform to allow Bukele to run indefinitely • FRANCE 24 English

El Salvador’s ruling party approved new constitutional reforms allowing for indefinite presidential re-election, opening the door to President May Boule for another term in power. With this reform, we’re giving power to those who should have always had it, the Salvadoran people. It’s simple. If you, the Salvadoran people, agree with how a president did his work, then you can vote for him again. And if you don’t agree, you vote for a better option. Boules party also approved amendments that would extend the presidential term from 5 to 6 years. The second round of the election where the top candidates face off will also be removed. You’re condemning future generations just because you want to preserve your power. We’ve had examples of dictatorships and we’ve had examples of authoritarianism both from the right and from the left and neither is good. Boule has been in office since 2019 and was reelected last year with an 85% majority, giving him almost full control of state institutions. He secured a new term despite a constitutional prohibition on immediate re-election. The president once dubbed himself the world’s coolest dictator. He enjoys enormous popularity for his so-called anti-gang lore consisting of mass street arrests without warrants. Boule reduced violence in El Salvador to historic lows. Critics, however, say that his government has been overshadowed by repression of human rights and exile of humanitarian activists and journalists.

Salvadoran lawmakers on Thursday passed a constitutional reform abolishing the limit on the number of presidential terms. This change allows President Nayib Bukele, in power since 2019, to run for re-election indefinitely.
