    WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said he is set to raise tariffs on India further in the next 24 hours in light of its continued purchases of Russian oil, which he said is “fueling the war machine.”

    Speaking on CNBC on Tuesday morning, Trump noted that India went from being the “highest tariff nation” to giving the U.S. zero tariffs, but that it was “not good enough” because of the oil purchases.

    Last week, India was slapped with a 25% tariff rate after being unable to reach a trade deal with the U.S. by the Aug. 1 deadline. Those tariffs will kick in on Thursday.

    “India has not been a good trading partner because they do a lot of business with us, but we don’t do business with them,” Trump said, appearing on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” program by phone. “We settled on 25% but I think I’m going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they’re buying Russian oil. They’re fueling the war machine. And if they’re going to do that, then I’m not going to be happy.”

  44. A friend who works in the export industry says that 25% is already a kill stroke for most companies. Increasing it to 50, 100 even 1000% is pointless as your intended target has already checked out at 25%. He should have started at 5% and threatened to take it to 10%.

    What he’s doing here is standing over a dead body and threatening to hit it with bigger sticks.
