Hey guys! I’m planning a bikepacking trip through Austria over summer. I’m studying on bilingual highschool in Slovakia, so I’ll be on a budget. If you are from any village/town along the Eurovelo9 path and if you’re able to answer some of the questions I will be grateful!
**Accomodation**
What is the cheapest way to sleep through the night somewhere in warm where I can charge my batteries and store a bike for night? Any hostels/couchsurfing hosts you know and can recommend? I certainly don’t need some huge comfort, just some place I can sleep through the night. How is it with camping in tents in nature? Is it prohibited or it’s okay to camp on any meadow?
**Food and drinks**
What are some typical Austrian dishes or drinks I should try? Are there any restaurants/bars you can recommend which serve good food for a reasonable price? Which is the best option for supermarkets to replenish my resources?
**Roads and traffic**
I understand that general view about bikes on roads from drivers is rather negative, of course I’ll be using bike paths everywhere where possible. How is the state of bike paths? Are there many? Are there any traffic regulations I should know about?
**Historical and natural landmarks**
What are some places along the Eurovelo9 (max. 20km away from the path) that I shouldn’t miss and are easily accessible on bike? Anything worth seeing, even some places that are not really known but you consider them great to see.
Thank you so much for your time and possible answers! I’m aware of the fact that I can look up some of the information online, but I feel it’s better to ask locals. You can also DM me if you want if you have some extra information for me. I attach a screenshot of the Eurovelo9 path as well as a link to the map online.
Take care!

Accommodiation: Camping outside of designated Campsites is forbidden in Austria, except for some regions above the treeline. So I wouldn’t risk just pitching up a tent. Campsites do have “tenting” Areas. So if I were you I would look up some campsites if you’re open to that. Otherwise youth/cycling hostels are a thing. Maybe get an updated version of a guidebook for the Eurovelo9. Those usually have all the information.Otherwise AriBnB is your friend I guess.
If it’s a designated bikepath in Austria, it either really is designated infrastructur like a bikepath, or just some signs that guide you around high-traffic roads, usually through the villages. Generally the condition is good, but I hope you aren’t trying to do your trip on a racing bycicle/with racing street tyres, as it’s quite possible that much of it is on gravel and dirt roads. Gravelbike should be fine, normal everyday bicycle roadtires are fine, mountainbike is unecessary imo. Just makes the trip more exhausting.
Hi, im from the area around Hartberg, Styria and the route goes right by my house 😀 Looking at this map of the [route (sadly in german)](https://www.radtouren.at/radtouren/eurovelo-9/#dm=1) it looks like the route is following the Bunderstaße B54 until Hartberg, but mostly on side roads or bike paths, only short sections on the Bundestraße and it shares parts of the “Thermenradweg” called R12. Regarding cars and bikes, if you dont ride your bike like a maniac and stop at red traffic lights, dont turn around on the Bundestraße and so on you will be fine 😛 The link also shows some highlights on the route.
Hey, I did the EV9 from Vienna to Pula. It was really great and I highly recommend you the part from Fehring to Bad Radkersburg. Also the part between Slov. Bistrica and Lubjliana was very nice (besides industry area around Celje). Which bike are you taking? Just south of Vienna is some unpaved part which is definitely not carbon road bike friendly, but it can be circumnavigated. I took a little detour between Grimmenstein and Fehring, so I can’t tell you too much about this part.
Sleeping: I mostly used hostels (Maribor, Trbolvje, Ljubljana, Trieste). If you are fine to be with other people it can be around 10-20€ a night. I had my tent, but used it not really (just heavy luggage).
If you want to know something further, just ask. 🙂
I hope you enjoy it! I did a ~300 km of eurovelo 6 last year and it was a great adventure. Really enjoyed every minute of it. Wish I had time this summer to do something similar.
My tips from the experience:
Austria technically has a rainy season in the summer so plan for rain but hope you avoid it.
Mornings can be cool, even on days that are supposed to be very hot.
You will always get passed by old people on electric bikes. It is the way, particularly near the cities.
Can’t help much more than that as I am not well versed in the path but thought the support was worth the typing.
