Romania deployed two F-16 fighter jets overnight on August 5–6 in response to a large-scale Russian drone attack on Ukraine’s Odesa region, the country’s Ministry of Defense announced on August 6.
According to the statement, Russian forces targeted civilian infrastructure in the area of Izmail, a Ukrainian city located near the Romanian border.
“On the night of August 5-6, the Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on the civilian infrastructure in the Ismail area, Ukraine, in the vicinity of the border with Romania. Radar systems detected aerial targets in the Ukrainian space, close to Tulcea County. At 01:10, the population in the north of the county was warned via RO-Alert system.,” the ministry reported.

The F-16s were scrambled to monitor Romanian airspace. No unauthorized incursions were detected during the mission.
The Ministry of Defense added that it will “search the area” and confirmed that “ NATO allies are informed in real time.”
Earlier, Russian forces carried out a strike on Izmail, targeting critical civilian infrastructure. Officials confirmed there were no casualties or damage to residential buildings.
The attack caused a fire, which firefighters managed to extinguish by morning. The blaze destroyed industrial equipment, and emergency crews are continuing work to release gas from the system.
