What are the alternatives though? Rishi? Truss? Priti? Starmer?
There’s a thin bench, a compromised one, an exceptionally unlikeable one, or an even more polarizing one.
Not a fan of Tories or Johnson, but he can sell wartime leadership TBH. In the midst of an existential European war, where the UK has been one of Ukraine’s most steadfast allies *because* of BoJo, do you really interject uncertainty into the mix? His record may be overcompensating for unsavory Russian money in the Conservative party and his COVID hypocrisy, but I’d lay it against almost anyone else in the free world.
Or, that would at least be my pitch, if I were him. “I fucked up, but let us fry the big fish first and then I will stand down.”
> No 10 denies PM fined again
But they have no credibility now, so that denial won’t make any difference.
> Tory MPs reconsider his survivability
I don’t endorse the Tory MPs who are considering offing Boris – brutal murder is never the solution – but I’m not going to be shedding any tears if they do.
> Allies of Jeremy Hunt, the former health secretary, and Penny Mordaunt, a trade minister, were said by MPs to have renewed discreet preparations for a leadership contest.
They’d be my two front-runners as well. Hunt has had a top job before, and will be seen as a steady hand, with minimal Boris stink on him. Mordaunt is a Brexit loon, which counts for a lot among the Tories these days, but has very little experience in a top job.
> The majority of the public are sick and tired of the story; Conservative MPs are sick and tired of the story.
Yes indeed. That’s why Boris needs to resign. We’re sick of having a lying, law-breaking, scumbag PM who keeps telling us to wait for something and then whining it’s been going on too long when we do. He isn’t fit to be an MP, let alone PM, and the country will be markedly better off when he’s out of office.
Also, I know IDs is an iredeemable fuckwit, but “sick and tired”? Really? During a pandemic? While trying to defend Boris for breaking pandemic rules? That’s a truly crass language choice.
