Sen. Baldwin dismisses Rep. Tiffany’s idea to add wildfire management to tariff talks with Canada
Tiffany proposed the idea after smoky skies in Wisconsin from Canadian wildfires
Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin dismissed an idea from Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany this week to push President Trump to include wildfire management demands as part of trade negotiations after days of smoky skies in Wisconsin from Canadian wildfires. “You know there’s lots of ways to do diplomacy that don’t have to do with tariffs,” Baldwin said during a stop in Milwaukee, Wednesday. “We have diplomatic channels. We have a state department. We have an ambassador. That’s where a lot of these discussions ought to be going on. I just believe Trump thinks a tariff is a solution to everything.” Baldwin, who toured Diamond Discs International to highlight the impact of the administration’s tariffs, suggested including the discussion as part of negotiations surrounding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Tiffany proposed the idea after writing to the Canadian ambassador. “I think the only thing we can do is force it into tariff discussions with Canada,” Tiffany said in an interview Monday at the Wisconsin State Fair with Political Director Matt Smith. “We can’t tell people in Canada what to do, but you put it on the table.”Also, Wednesday, state Rep. Calvin Callahan (R-Tomahawk) joined lawmakers from Minnesota, Iowa and North Dakota in filing a formal complaint against Canada, asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and International Joint Commission to launch an investigation into the country’s wildfire management practices.
