> For just one month, some passengers on some routes will get a glimpse of what it’s like to travel on the railways at prices permanently available to people in pretty much every other country in the world. And then, in May, the window on what rail travel should be like will be slammed shut again.
Didn’t Burnham want the congestion charge in Manchester if you used even the m60 ring road.
It’s quite simply an judgement as to whether the general tax payer should subsidise rail users.

People who don’t use trains should subsidise people who do?
The cost of commuting using rail has increased far more than the cost of driving a vehicle over the last 20 years. The cut of 5p from fuel tax was a ridiculous decision and most benefits those who have expensive, powerful, inefficient cars.
Rail travel is ridiculously expensive and even though it would be my preference when I make journeys over 100 miles- the prices are always prohibitive. Driving is nearly always significantly cheaper.
However, my concern with subsiding rail travel further is that it would again benefit the South of England, especially the commuter belt whilst the rest of the country pays for it. I’d like to see greater use of rail but first I’d like to see some more equitable investment in infrastructure outside of London and the surrounding areas.
The great british rail sale gave me pretty much the exact same cost for tickets as the standard trainline app for my chosen journey.
What fares was I supposed to be seeing?
The fact its far cheaper for me to drive for hundreds of miles on my own in an inefficient 5 seater diesel car as opposed to getting a single ticket for a train going to the same place (and this is with ultra-thrifty shopping around for the cheapest advance ticket at the cheapest time) is just ridiculous.
And this isn’t just some specific anecdotal example. The car is cheaper every single time here. Regardless of destination or rail route.
It needs sorting.
Jesus, ISIS used letting their hostages outside for an hour as part of the torture and to keep them complicit.
Now the government is taking notes
Oh god yeah we have some of the most insane prices even with a railcard and advanced tickets it’s just too expensive for a lot of routes some journeys are way cheaper to go by coach that takes twice as long see Sheffield to London with out a railcard it’s around the £80 mark with some being well over £200 in standard class on train
coach megabuss is £5.50 same day no wounder no one wants to go by train
Went to Blackpool in 2019. Was looking forward to a nice train journey with some cans and can relax after a week of work.
Turns out it was £150 each for four people to get the train. I drove and the diesel cost £40. I even tried split ticketing and every trick but could only get it to £109
All raid should be nationalised and if not, all private companies should be fined heavily if they tried to pay out high disgusting profit dividends to shareholders.
Subsidies are just another way of saying “ universal credit” but essentially the uk private railway companies.
Makes me so fricken mad.
Classic tory operation, run it down to shit, then promise another more private way to make it better.
You know what would fix it – listen to the man in seat 61 and do exactly what he says
