  1. What to argue about ? Marie Curie Skłodowska was french cuz she was Polish born in Poland but studied in France and achieved everything there.

Kopernik was German cuz he was born in Poland but German ethnicity and it doesn’t matter that he achieved everything in Poland.

  2. I don’t get it?
Is there any push NOT to use her full name?

  3. She was treated like shit by the French, ostracised etc. Now they want to claim her as her own. Typical French. Let’s sweep all the negatives under the carpet. Cowards

  4. The french don’t have any successful, famous people that have greatly contributed to the humanity so they need to steal ours of course. Can’t blame them.

  5. I was actually thinking before if we were to put people on euro banknotes Skłodowska Curie is probably one of the best possible choices.

She’s an incredible scientist, worked across the continent and is utterly unproblematic.

It’s a good thing for Poland if she’s on the note (as long as they get her name right!)

  6. French: what a great example of a feminist we have.

Then maybe use her maiden name how she wanted?

    French: fuck no

  7. Why did you write her name wrong in the topic of this post?

  8. She didn’t name Polonium after Poland for nothing. She even regreted that she did not give that name to Radium because it has more uses as an element.

  9. Formally female that get married in Poland can choose husband’s surname, maiden plus husband (both), or keep maiden. Second one is often a choice of person who want to be identified after marriage- like lawyers known to costumers, celebs known by maiden name, sportswoman, public people … in this case scientist.

So if she was formally Maria Skłodowska Curie- this name should be used, it is her surname, Skłodowska is not a second name that is for formal purposes (her second name is Salomea).

This is not about what Polish and French governments have to establish- If those are in doubt descendants of Maria should be asked.

  10. Forgoing the conversation about the surname, why do people get her first name wrong? It’s Maria. I don’t convert Jean into Jan ?

  11. Marie Curie, Frederic Chopin and Nicolas Copernic are the greatest french people !
