Arson, death threats and ‘eco-crazy councils’: low-traffic neighbourhoods are dividing England

  1. Quite literally dividing England. Anecdotally, of course, but it certainly seems that around here only wealthy residents need clean lungs.

  2. Rat running robs kids of the opportunity to play in their own streets. I find this the saddest part of the ever increasing volumes of traffic in my local areas.

LTNs are contentious and I think they have a tendency to bring out the spoilt privileged car child inside some people.

Car privilege is interesting as a lot of people I speak to make out like their native Americans being forced onto reservations (yes that dramatic). The false victim-hood is astounding, cars are so well catered for yet people throw a fit because they can’t rat run down a road or need to drive 40 metres extra to get to their drive.

I think the message from most councils is to just stop using your fucking car for short urban journeys. They’re not waging a war on motorists or trying to force you off the road.

Population centres are fast becoming awful places for cars and long term for everyone’s sake it’s better if most access them in alternative ways.

  3. Yes, let’s argue about traffic bullshit while the 1000s of more important things are all falling apart. Let’s be divided about it, rather than United on the cost of living and russian aggression and corruption in government and the NHS.

  4. In the run up to the local election in this part of south London, the local Tory candidate Tarquin Honeybottom has been knocking on doors having a right old whinge about low traffic neighbourhoods. His national party back them!

  5. EXACTLY like in the Netherlands in the 70s where the mayor’s received so many death threats they had to travel with permanent security, now “Autoluw” areas of low traffic, are a beloved part of their national identity that make their cities some of the nicest in the world.
