I was told you cannot use cement on your offgrid land, so I wonder if this is legal what these lovely two from the UK are doing in Castelo Branco?

They have quite a huge audience and mostly from UK so a lot of people from UK will think this is perfectly fine in portugal. Can you just build buildings with cement on an old ruin or if there is an old ruin nearby, if the land is under 2ha?

Also are you allowed to live there, when you dont have an address even or a post box and no sewage for the toilet?

  1. That’s probably a old abandoned house they recovered. It’s not always like that, but for the most part, if you find a old house in your property even if it’s in a no construction zone, you can rebuild it as long as you keep the original structure. Bare in mind that it varies depending on multiple factors and sometimes you won’t be granted permission to do it.

  2. Well, just because it’s away from the city doesn’t mean there aren’t laws covering stuff. If it’s an existing structure, you can renovate it. If it’s a new structure, it take some paperwork, but you can also do it. Not every village and town in the country has access to sanitation networks, so they use mobile tanks to drain cesspools. It’s not impossible, but city hall probably made sure they understood what they were getting into.

Also, given the location, there’s no rush to chase a couple of hippies from lawfully acquired land.

  3. My uncle is an “empreiteiro” and you should see what he did to his house lmao, yes they can do it.

You’re thinking of paving the ground with concrete, then they would have to pay a tax and get papers which is why you rarely see rural offgrid doing it.

  4. They can, in theory, recover an already existing structure/house. Getting a “living license” is another story.

Also you can renovate/recover granted that you applied for and were granted the permissions from the council. Not sure if this is the case.

  5. Anything that uses cement needs a license from the local entities. Whether they have it or not, that’s another thing.

  6. Algumas coisas sao, outras nem por isso.

Esse e outros do género. Nao é à falta de denúncias.

Por falar nisso, tá na hora de ir outra.
