  1. Any cyclists out there who can explain why those in the video opted to use the road instead of the cycling lane? Is there a genuine reason like, or are they just ignorant arseholes?

  2. Probably going to get downvoted to fuck for this but it’s fairly obvious why they’re on the road if you consider what it’s like in that bike lane.

The surface is nowhere near as consistent, there are changes in height, it ends, it starts, it goes around bus stops and you even have that bumpy pedestrian tile thing. Yeah, I can understand why they’d be in the road instead, which is something they’re legally entitled to.

Edit; to the lad who reported me as suicidal, good man yourself boy, fecking muppet.

  3. In terms of facts:

    1) You’re not obliged to use the cycle lanes (many of which are actually dangerous in Ireland)

    2) You are not obliged to be in single file – you can be 2 abreast as these people are

Generally, around town, I find that cyclists don’t impact the speed I get from one traffic jam to the next.

  4. And here’s why I never want to cycle again in Ireland. Too many times drivers just brush against me because they don’t fucking care about cyclists or think it’s perfectly fine to “take them on the bonnet”. I’ll never understand how fucked up some people can be to think this.

  5. Cycling experience in Ireland is crap. Three examples I’ll give.

1: There was the time a car pass on my right, pulled over in front of me in the cycle lane parked and got out. They said sorry. I dismount walked around the car on the footpath and resumed my journey. Issue was lack of awareness on the drivers part.

2: There was the time my lane led up to a round about, a dedicated lane joined to a footpath off the road. (Like in the video) I followed around the round about and found that at my exit the lane ended in an overgrown bush.after coming to an abrupt stop, I entered the road and resumed my journey. The issue here was a lack of maintenance.

3: While I’ve never had an accident with a pedestrian (I’m a cautious rider) I find having to weave out and back in behind bus shelters anxiety inducing. The angle of the lane and the position of the shelter often means that I’ll suddenly appear to a pedestrian crossing the cycle lane. And when a particularly busy bus is disembarking, pedestrians really struggle to see danger when crossing the lane. The issue here is lack of planning. There are plenty of examples in the Netherlands of how to treat cyclists and pedestrians properly to avoid collision, but the planning appears to have focused on what it looks like rather than how it functions.

  6. Shouldn’t let morons with as few brain cells as that on the road.

That they are in control of a car is even more frightening

  7. At the bus stop here, unless you jump down off the kerb into the road it’s literally illegal to not get off and walk until the next bike lane begins.

Directly in front of the stop, there is no bike lane. It’ll be the same at the next stop, and the same at any junctions.

The bike lane looks clean and modern but it’s not practical for use in ways non-cyclists wouldn’t catch at first glance. It should never have been built this way, it’s a box-ticking exercise, useless and paid for by taxes.

  8. Holy shit, regardless of personal side, the anger and vitriol in this thread for a 30 second slice of video with very little context on the situation is insane.

Legitimately some people need to have a word with themselves about how angry they get while driving if they’re this seething just watching something.

  9. I love coming to the comment section to hear wankers with no understanding of cycling complain.

The shear amount of inpatient, angry, ignorant drivers here is overwhelming.

  10. Instead of whining about cyclists following the rule of law, petition for change in law, or for better cycle lanes that actually attract riders.

  11. typical irish small mindedness. cars think they own the fuckin road when they dont.

roads are public property. anyone can use them. that includes pedestrians, cyclists, sulky carts, tractors, etc.

unless it’s a motorway, that cyclist has just as much right to be there as the guy in the car

  12. Absolute nothing wrong in this video, aside from the idiot passenger who probably got delayed 30 seconds for his breakfast roll.

Firstly the group are perfectly entitled to use the road, and are right to travel two a breast taking the full lane and prevent a dangerous close pass. There is a broken white line and so the driver is free to overtake whenever it’s safe which is why they likely haven’t filtered into single file. Why would you? So he can dangerously close pass each of you one at a time? As opposed to correctly overtaking the group which would be far more efficient for him?

Why aren’t the cyclists using the cycle lane?
For the same reason I rarely can. They are usually horrifically designed, not maintained, blocked by a cars, and poorly surfaced with abrupt endings that leave you stranded at the curb, on a footpath, or at a pedestrian set of lights. Travelling at any training speed on a most cycle lanes in Dublin would be dangerous – I wouldn’t dream of it. It would put me my bike, and anyone else using it more casually with kids etc in danger. Not to mention the pedestrians who often randomly walk into it.

Don’t vilify this law abiding group who are out for a bit of exercise. Maybe instead condemn the man encouraging serious life changing injuries.

  13. Tbh I never use bike lanes. They are inconsistent, and I don’t want to risk it trying to merge again when the lane ends.

  14. It’s not a cycle lane. It’s a fucked up path that aims to cause accidents between cyclists and pedestrians, because it goes through a fucking bus stop. Whomever designed this shit deserves to have 2 flat tires every single day.

  15. As a cyclist, and motorist (including motorcycles, up to commercial vehicles) I am always confused when motorists are pissed at cyclists for riding two abreast. In truth, when a group of cyclist are all single file, it lengthens the group by a factor of 2 or 3, making it more difficult to safely pass. Alternatively a group riding 2 abreast, takes up less linear distance, and is much easier to overtake for a motorist. If the roadway is such that a cyclist must use the lane, it’s much better for motorists, if they shorten the group in this way.
