Trump’s tariff war: Canada’s sovereignty is the real issue, trade expert warns

1. U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada is fundamentally about the U.S. seeking to diminish Canada’s sovereignty, according to a trade expert from PwC. The U.S. has imposed significant tariffs on various Canadian goods, including a recent increase to 35 percent on items not covered by the CUSMA agreement. Despite these tariffs, Canadian exports to the U.S. have shown resilience, with a trade surplus growing in June 2025. Experts highlight that Canada’s situation differs from other countries like the EU and Japan, as Trump’s aspirations for Canada to become “the 51st state” reflect a unique desire for deeper economic and defense alignment that could compromise Canada’s independence. Canada now faces a choice between enduring U.S. pressure without a deal or pursuing a form of economic union that stops short of full annexation.

2. Trump is the real issue.

   His justification for trade wars are based on lies.

   His power to manipulate tariffs doesn’t exist.  He has stolen it from Congress under the guise of national emergencies.  Literally every country on earth was a simultaneous national emergency the second he was elected.

   He has seized power that isn’t his to wage economic war on the planet.

   He’s a known felon, established child groomer and rapist, and a business fraud so massive his reputation for cheating contractors was globally known.

   HE WAS REFUSED BY ALL US BANKS TO EVEN DO BUSINESS WITH HIM BECAUSE HE WAS TIED TO CRIMINALS.

   He’s a criminal president.  Americans need to use their laws and constitution that were designed to protect from people like Trump to remove him and prosecute him.

   Even then, the USA has shattered its global credibility

   As a Canadian it’s hard to express how completely disrespectful and ignorant this man is.  We aren’t going to forget.

3. I don’t think Trump is kidding at all when he talks about annexing Canada by economic means. Wake up call for all Canadians.

4. There is no way that the citizens of Canada will lay back and let Trump erode our sovereignty. Canadians can and will fight back, hopefully the individual states realize this and do their part to end the Trump regime.

5. We need to keep this in mind when the CUSMA discussions begin. We should have low expectations and prepare for some really tough times ahead.

6. Yet our politicians will continue to try and make deals and talk with them.

7. The trade war with canada is the stupidest F’ing thing… Per capita Canadians spend vastly more on American goods than Americans spend on Canadian goods.

   Of course a country with like 11% of the population of the USA is going to spend less on USA goods than the USA per capital spends on Canadian goods.

   The trade imbalance is steep but it’s in America’s FAVOR.

8. It is utterly insane to suggest that the Canadian public would accept greater integration with the USA, economic or otherwise, in the current context. People are extremely angry with our treacherous former friends. This piece totally misses that
