“The population of Japanese nationals fell by a record amount — more than 900,000 people — in 2024, official data showed, as the country battles to reverse its perennially low birth rates.”
“While many developed countries are struggling with low birth rates, the problem is particularly acute in Japan where the population has been declining for years.”
“Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has called the situation a “quiet emergency”, pledging family-friendly measures like more flexible working hours and free day care to try and reverse the trend.”
“Last year, the number of Japanese fell by 908,574, or 0.75 percent, to 120.65 million.”

No time, no money, no sex. Easy as that.
Happen across Asia. The late stage of capitalism and real estate centralised economies.
I love how companies and governments make life almost unlivable if you’re below middle manager. Then they’re shocked you dont want to follow tradition and choose to be poorer
It’s very sad.
It looks like Japan can’t get out of this cycle
Why would people want children anyway, if it’s not strictly necessary?
Seems odd to bring more people into our dying, overpopulated world.
For years I’ve heard of the work culture where you can’t leave before your boss does. Also specific worlds for, “death by work,” and “s***cide by work”.
Is this still relevant in Japan, have things got better? Do they realise having a work culture like this stops people having families?
Working 12 hours a day will do that.
I mean there is negative wage growth among companies offering bonuses. Many people dont even get twice yearly bonuses or major benefits from their workplace. The people who have the lowest wages are the ones in prime years to have children.
It boils down to money and a one time gift of a joke of an amount isn’t going to fix it. It’s not even about work hours any more, its workplace expectations/stigmas and inflation outpacing wages. Japan could benefit from everyone saying the quiet parts out loud. Japan is slipping negatively in every metric I come across and its business as usual, no alarm bells or action being taken.
Same procedure as last year, miss Sophie?
This will be a record every year from now on, at least 30 years.
>The anti-immigrant party has falsely claimed foreigners enjoy more welfare benefits than Japanese nationals.
somehow racists – no matter the country – universally agree on that one…
It’s tradition at this point.
Three other factors contribute to the problem in Japan. First, as more young women go to college they see careers that interest them and cause them to delay pregnancy. Second, just the time spent in college, and Post graduate would work to defer child bearing. Third, They need to find a mate that they deem appropriate, and, somewhat paradoxically, dating apps can work against that.
I never understood how they crammed 125M people into such a small space.
They’re tired of our bullshit
I love vacationing in Japan but I will never live there. Their work culture is killer. I hate happy hours in the USA. Imagine doing happy hour every day after work until 10-11pm. Salaries are also bad and there is no sense of personality and there is a lack of space. Salary men and women are husks of people. Still love going to Japan though.
It’s not just Japan having this issue. They aren’t that much lower than the EU in fertility
From the Middle Ages through until about 1900s, the Japanese population has been around 30-40million. It peaked in the early 2000s around 128million and its about 120million now. Maybe these massively inflated population aren’t sustainable for the planet, and getting back to that 30-40million mark is healthier in the long term. People should consider, is it better we bring our population down by lower birth rates over a century, or all at once in a violent resource war, pandemic or famine.
“Mr. President: I’m afraid it’s time to release the weebs.”
Hell yeah starve the corpos of their cheap labor
If only they had actual lives to live and so raise children but japanese culture dictates that you live to work, in order to grow a family you need to at least have a work to live culture.
Wow, congratulations on the record!
Good. I love being apart of the problem. The conditions will continue until morale is improved. Want more kids? Fix work life balance and cost of living to encourage families
Do you know how punishing/gruelling the life of an average Japanese salary man is? And after all that they make less than someone in France or Spain. It ain’t gonna happen bro….
I have friends in Japan, none of them want children because they don’t have time or money, they can’t even buy a house and rent is fucking expensive, government and corporations exploit people to a breaking point and then wonder why no one wants to birth more people to suffer like them. Funny.
They are losing a good sized city annually, that is crazy
Have you tried letting employees go home at a decent hour with a living wage in their pocket?
