Blount County tire landfill business gets approval to move after years of trying

  • 08.08.2025

BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Bud Adams has been trying to move his B&B Tire Landfill business since 2018. Last August, he renewed that effort. With a 3 to 1 vote on Thursday, August 7, the Blount County Commission finally approved that move.

“We win some, we lose some. I don’t think the battle’s over yet, so we’ll just have to see what happens in the next round,” said Cleveland Mayor James Sullivan.

Bud Adams and his family were victorious as the Blount County Commission approved his application to move B&B Tire Landfill to the property he owns near the town of Cleveland. With the current site in Hayden nearly full, the new property off of Hazelrig Road was needed to keep his business going.

“I’ve worked on this for several years this project. I’m glad we got it, I’m glad for the men we got working and the people we got working in the office. They’ve got kids and depend on us for a living. That wears heavy on me, that hurts me,” said Adams.

During the process, neighbors expressed concerns over the level of contamination that tires buried in the ground could have on their drinking water. Billy Cooch, a geologist with Labella, performed water samples on the five water wells at the Hayden location to ease their concerns.

“All of the samples returned non-detect for all of the constituents at all five wells,” said Cooch.

With a major hurdle out of the way, Bud Adams attorney says they still have a few more steps to take before everything is final.

“We’ll have to file a declaratory judgement with the circuit court here in Blount County to have a judge bless the process and say that everything was done appropriately as far as giving notice and that type of thing to the public,” said Attorney James Thrash.

Bud Adams says it’ll be months before ADEM will issue him a permit. He says he wants to start working on the new site to make the transition smooth when that time comes.
