Summer vibes in Croatia

Croatia

In what is traditionally one of the busiest months of the year, Croatia welcomed 4.6 million visitors in July, a 2 percent decrease on the same month last year. Overnight stays reached 29.2 million, down 1 percent.

Foreign visitors accounted for nearly 4.2 million arrivals and around 26 million overnight stays, both down 1 to 2 percent. Domestic tourism also dipped slightly, with 429,000 arrivals and 3.3 million overnight stays, both down 1 percent on last July, daily Jutarnji list reports.

Mixed results across accommodation types

Private accommodation remains the most popular choice, with 12.3 million overnight stays in July, although this was 2.3 percent lower than last year. Campsites followed with 5.7 million overnight stays, down 1.1 percent. Hotels, on the other hand, recorded growth, with over 4.8 million overnight stays — an increase of 2.3 percent compared to last July.

Despite more apartments being available than last year, many remained empty during the height of the season.

Shifts in source markets

Germany remains the largest market for Croatia, although arrivals from Germany fell by around 7 percent in July. The decline is partly attributed to school holidays in key German states starting only in early August. Slovene arrivals were down by around 3 percent, while Austrians recorded a drop of more than 5 percent. Czech visitor numbers also continued to fall, down over 4 percent.

In contrast, arrivals from Poland rose by around 7 percent, and the United Kingdom recorded a small increase. The United States market continued its strong growth trend, with double-digit increases in overnight stays compared to last year.

Year-to-date still positive

Despite the July slowdown, overall figures for the first seven months of the year remain positive. Croatia welcomed 12.2 million tourists in total, 2 percent more than the same period last year, with overnight stays also up 2 percent at 58.7 million.

Foreign arrivals rose 1 percent to 10.3 million, with 51.4 million overnight stays. Domestic tourism has seen stronger growth, with arrivals up 8 percent to 1.8 million and overnight stays up 6 percent to 7.3 million.

As of this week, there are over one million tourists currently in Croatia, with the largest numbers coming from Germany and Croatia, followed by Slovenia, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. The most visited regions are Istria, Split-Dalmatia, and Primorje-Gorski Kotar.
