I’ll defend the Polish government on terms of the necessity for a controlled phase out of those fossil fuels just like I defended the German and the Italian one before.
However, in Poland’s case, there is an element of massive hypocrisy that’s just leaving a bitter aftertaste in my mouth.
Maybe the Polish government shouldn’t have banned new wind farms and insist that all existing turbines be gone by 2035.
Oh noes, what to do? I know, another rant about Germany and EU should help.
I think this sabre-rattling that everyone needs to stop imports immediately is a mistake of polish govt. Poland will stop using Russian gas next year – and after that date polish PM can come up with some rushing of other EU countries. Situation is more complicated with oil – technically Poland can import with tankers much more than it needs, but setting up a deals with other producers will take time, having strong partners(like Germany) to negotiate oil deals would put us in better position.
If the polish government phases out gas until the end of the year it is sound economic policy.
If germany phases out gas unil the end of the year it is proof that germany is a secret ally of russia that wants to se ukraine and poland destroyed in a modern Molotov-rippentropp-pact 2.0.
That is the very worst aspect of PIS, beyond any factual disagreements:
Rampant hypocrisy, bad faith actions and leaning into anti german bigotry for short term domestic gains.

See guys, here’s the thing – there is no grand plan, no message, no actual idea behind PiS actions. They are, always were and most likely always will be 100% populists. Poland doesn’t have a real foreign policy since 2015, since that stuff doesnt sell to their poor rural voterbase. Every single thing PiS diplomats and politicians do is geared towards and fueled by internal affairs. Polls say people dislike Russia – they sanction Russia. Polls say people dislike Orban – they suddenly don’t talk to Orban. Polls say people think we should stand with Ukraine – they go to Kyiv while making a big fucking show of it. However, polls also say the same poor rural electorate would basically starve if gas prices go any higher, so they will wiggle themselves out of any sudden actions against the Russian gas.
There’s no point in analysing what is basically a knee-jerk reaction to the Polish public opinion. Dont make the same mistake we did and ever elect people like this into your country’s office.
It needs to be an EU decision with burden and resource sharing. You know, like literally everything else that’s big that we do!
