A supposed new update surrounding Taylor Swift‘s original manuscript and directorial debut set Swifties screaming on social media today, but all is not as it seems.

Entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider reported yesterday, Aug. 7, that there was movement on the front of the singer’s feature film directorial debut, closing in on three years after news first broke that Searchlight Pictures had signed on to produce her original screenplay.

“Taylor is a once-in-a-generation artist and storyteller,” Searchlight presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield said at the time (Greenbaum has since transitioned to Disney). “It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey.”

According to Sneider, playwright and screenwriter Alice Birch was recently brought on board for the project, reportedly to help rewrite Swift’s script.

“Allowing more experienced writers to rewrite scripts is standard practice in Hollywood,” Sneider wrote. “I’m told that the [sic] Birch is working closely with Swift and ‘tailoring’ the project to her creative vision.”

Fans on social media were largely thrilled by the news, with words like “awesome” and “amazing” thrown around, while another said they “can’t wait” to see the final product. However, our sources at Searchlight confirm that the news is not true, and Birch is not involved. Parade has also reached out to Birch’s rep for comment.

While details about this film’s plot remain under wraps, Swift did once share with fans, “I think I will always want to tell human stories, about human emotion. I never say never, but I can’t imagine myself like filming an action sequence. If it happens one day, honestly, like that’ll be funny character growth, but at this point I could see it going in a more comedic, irreverent place.”

She added, while in conversation at the Toronot International Film Festival in 2022, “I don’t always see myself always telling stories about extreme guttural heartbreak at your most formative age that really sort of debilitates you emotionally for years and then you have to develop the scar tissue in order to move on with your life, and then like limp your way to your typewriter, write a novel about it. I think I’ve done that.”
