Trump threatens India with high tariffs over Russian oil • FRANCE 24 English

India no longer accusing India of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine via its continued purchases of Russian oil. Donald Trump is warning that US tariffs on Indian goods currently set at 25% could be in for a substantial hike. It is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia. New Delhi appears to have been taken by surprise. India’s foreign ministry pointing out that Washington had previously encouraged the country to buy Russian energy products as the US and Europe sanctioned them. Part of a western strategy to limit disruption on oil markets and avoid a global price shock. A pathway had to be found for Russian crude to be made available to the rest of the world. And India became that pathway with the concurrence of Western governments including the US administration. The new tariff threat is just the latest broken thread in what appears to be a fraying bond between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Until recently, the two right-wing populists had enjoyed an especially friendly relationship. We’re going to talk about analysts say Trump may be using the Russian oil issue to push for more concessions as the two sides continue to negotiate a trade deal. Trump is trying to cut the US’s 46 billion annual trade deficit with India while New Delhi remains loathed to remove protectionist measures for India’s domestically crucial agriculture industry. Indian officials meanwhile are complaining of US policy inconsistency. Both Turkey and China are also major importers of Russian oil but are not facing similar tariff threats over the practice. Meanwhile, the US and the EU continue to trade with Russia. Europe to the tune of 84 billion euros worth last year.

The US president warned that he would raise tariffs on India, stating that the country “doesn’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine.” In response, India called Trump’s threat of “substantially” higher tariffs over its purchase of oil from Russia “unjustified and unreasonable.” Bryan Quinn reports

  6. NATO was formed to counter Russian aggression, so why are you shouting India, India now?
    Russia was instigated by America and some European countries and why were they so eager to get Ukraine included in NATO? America still trades with Russia, Europe is still buying oil and gas from Russia, then why so much hue and cry over India buying from it? This hypocrisy is not going to work anymore.

  23. Either USA has completely changed it's foreign policy (which signals that their foreign policy of last 10-12 yeats was disaster) or trump is ruining last 10-12 years of foreign policy… that was to strengthen India usa relationship in order for free and secure trade in indo pacific

I agre India is not developed and rich as europe and japan and South korea right now … but India is a sovereign country and above mention country's/ regions sacrificed their self respect and sovereignty in order to get good life style but we Indians can accept slow growth rate without usa's trade but will never accept being puppet of someone else … that's why we developed our neuclear weapons… we developed our space program

You or any other country should not tell us from where to get crude oil or where not to. We are a free country, not your slave nation. The people of our country have even sacrificed their lives for this freedom.

  27. It's simple actually, India isn't allowing US farm products into its market. Trump is throwing a tantrum like a spoiled child. India survived 60 years of its independence standing against USA (of the 79yrs), the relationship improved just recently. If necessary we can go another 60 years against USA… A much weaker USA than the past.

  41. We don't care what USA think or do. Feel free to impose 500% tariff also. It would be a temporary pain for us but will give us a way to be self dependent.
