What is the actual law around Halal meat though? If it circumvents UK slaughter laws it should not be allowed, if it’s the same high standards and animals are slaughtered as per UK law with other bells and whistles then no issue.
i passed one on mull once. makes sense, i think shawarma is keeping a lot of crofters in business. considering one of our national dishes involved blood letting a pig via its neck repeatedly over the year before finally slaughtering it, we don’t have a leg to stand on
It doesn’t have to be a butchers, supermarkets have been selling halal meat not labelled as such. Then you get into the whole prepared food business, suck as KFC, Pizza Hut etc plus the restaurant trade
So it can turn up where you don’t expect it

You know what I always find odd about this rhetoric? It makes it sound like regular abbatoirs are pleasant gardens with flowers and wellbeing classes for coos and pigs and what not.
If you are going to make halal butchery a massive fucking problem, you might as well just stop eating meat all together. If you don’t, I see you.
I can speak on this a bit: halal does not have to mean no-stun. Modern plants stun and then do halal. The person doing slaughter just has to be of Islamic faith and have halal training.
There is zero difference in a modern plant whether you do stun/slaughter or stun/halal slaughter. The ONLY criteria is again the slaughterman must be Islamic faith and have halal training.
Most modern plants that can do so try to have halal slaughter. Why exclude the Muslim market when by doing it you can sell to them and every other Brit too? It’s stupid business sense to avoid it if it causes no welfare harm and expands your market.
Is there non-stun slaughter? Arguable. But not at any large, modern plant I know of. Stress makes bad meat. It’s a worse product to not stun.
Do I like it? No.
Do I also notice the people that kick up a fuss rarely, if ever, have the same concern about kosher? Yes.
More meat is halal than non, people are confusing halal and kosher
I think this requires banning kosher too. As a state we have avoided getting involved in these issues.

I’d imagine the people who are upset about halal butchers for ethical reasons are not vegetarian or vegans. Almost as if animal welfare isn’t their concern.
You can tell they are racist because they talk about Halal and not Kosher.
Presumably if a councillor wants to highlight the issue of no stun slaughter, he’d want to see Kosher slaughter banned, given that Kosher absolutely prohibits stunning, but Halal does actually allow for it.
Or is there more political capital to be gained out of being seen to be anti-Muslim than anti-Jew these days?

There’s quite a few resident English round here, and way too many clowns in motorhomes, but it doesn’t seem to overrun with Halal butchers. All the butchers I’ve ever seen in the Wee Toon are local butchers for local people.

Tommy is always at this shit. He got suspended for slinging racial abuse at a Chinese national who was working in the area a while back, while recently he’s gone out of his way to try and derail the local pride parade because the route passed a play park.

I used to agree with this point quite strongly, but after consideration, I really don’t think it’s a big deal.
Yes I’d prefer animals to be stunned and suffer as little as possible, but Halal/Kosher slaughter isn’t torture. They cut the major arteries in the neck and the animal bleeds out very quickly. It’s a quick way to go, and better than what 99% of people and animals experience when they die.

I’ll let you all in on a little secret. All halal meat could be stunned and slaughtered according to animal welfare laws. All of it. Every single piece and right wingers would be still against it.
Because a) Islamophobia. And b) the ones that have gone down the American Evangelical Christian right-wing rabbit hole, believr that, because prayers are said during halal slaughtering, the meat is consecrated to Allah (who they see as a false god). They literally believe the meat is satanic.
This is why, despite their anti-semitism, they don’t have a problem with kosher.
It’s not about the animal welfare, it never is. It’s about the Islamophobia and racism

Kosher is the issue, it’s just cruel to the animals, where as Halal just needs a prayer then it can be stunned and slaughtered like the rest of the meat we eat, where as Kosher can’t be stunned and the animal has to suffer
