  5. A peace deal where the defending country has to give something up is not a deal. Maybe if Russia was told they had to give up Kursk or Belograd would be better deal since Ukriane has had to put up with Russia’s shit for so long.

  6. Ukraine has the near unconditional backing of nearly everyone in NATO and some allies outside of NATO (e.g. South Korea, Australia and so on).

    When Ukraine, predictably, rejects this nonsense plan (they got the cards on their side, not Russia), they got their back, even against Trump.

    Besides, if Trump wants to fuck shit up, Ukraine can just return to mass bombing Russian refineries, driving energy prices up and endangering the interior political standing of Trump.

    So perceptions, that the US has Ukraine by the balls, are imho wrong.
    Sure, the US can hurt Ukraine by deciding to withdraw intelligence support and not delivering anymore equipment, but Ukraine can hurt the US a lot more by driving up those oil and thus gasoline prices.

It’s either give Ukraine what it needs now, or prepare to start storming beaches, or speaking Russian or Mandarin.

  14. I don’t know if Zelensky should get ahead on this or not? But I guess regardless of land grab the ultimate breaking point for Ukraine will be the question of security guarantees.. Could be time for Zelensky to run an media offensive in US.. Regardless next year the weapons funding wil be more reliable.. And the Russian economy is tanking more and more.

  18. If this were real then Trump would be consulting Zelensky on what could get Ukraine to the finish-line and a real peace. AFAIK, he’s not doing that. So this is really just Trump, again trying to work around Ukraine and force them to capitulate and surrender. This is at least the 3rd attempt.

  19. Trump is the one facing a dangerous situation. The US has no leverage over Ukraine. Any threats or actions Trump takes to stop supporting Ukraine if they don’t accept the deal are meaningless because the US has already ended most support and will cease to provide what little support remains regardless of whether Ukraine accepts or rejects the deal.

    If anything, Ukraine’s rejection of the deal puts Trump in a huge bind. Trump is trying the balance the pro and anti Ukraine factions of the Republican party, and sanctioning Ukraine for rejecting the deal while normalizing relations with Russia would very likely cause the pro Ukraine republicans to bolt from the Trump coalition. Trump needs to avoid making it appear he is actively hurting Ukraine to keep the pro Ukraine Republicans on board. Ukraine has more leverage than people realize.

  28. Zelensky has been able to avoid other such attempts. His strategies are absolutely brilliant. They must have a think tank gaming these political moves out. I am guessing he’ll ask for a ceasefire to negotiate this or something Putin can’t say yes to.
