Fans hummed in every corner, and sheets hung from windows at an overcrowded prison near the city of Toulouse, where inmates tried to cool down as temperatures pushed past 36 degrees Celsius, an AFP journalist observed on Thursday.
Southern France is in the grip of a heatwave, and for inmates at the Seysses detention centre, that heat is “unbearable”, one detainee said.
But like many prisons in France, Seysses is overcrowded — in June, it held on average more than twice its capacity.
“Having two people per cell has become the exception,” said one guard, whose name like all the detainees interviewed cannot be published.
Shouldn’t go to prison then.
Good
I swear to god fuckers will see the word prison and will instantly forget they are human and quite a lot of them aren’t even there for stuff that gives the appearance of justification.
Don’t break the law, dudes. A lot of people live and struggle the heat, prisoners are not special
I’m supposed to feel sorry for them? 🥱
I only feel sorry for the employees of those prisons, the rest get what they deserve. .
Damn yall care about people in prisons about as much as I expect my countrymen to. That’s a self burn and a shame on you
People who praise this should reflect on their supposed European values and go read some Cesare Beccaria
The solution is actually very simple : don’t come to prison.
Twenty years ago, prison conditions in France were already considered terrible, and today they are even worse.
Some disgusting comments. Prison is the punishment. Not being slow cooked, assaulted and whatever else you cretins celebrate happening to prisoners.
I expect and presume better than you.
Oh, the poor criminals…
Stop stealing, assaulting, raping, and killing, and you won’t go to prison.
According to the latest statistics, only 25% of the French population has air conditioning installed in their homes. So if 75% of the population can live without it, so do they.
Maybe don’t go to jail 🗣️🗣️
This comment section is disgusting
A lot of people were still arguing against AC when scores of law abiding elderly folks were dropping dead during heat waves. I’m not surprised, but disappointed to see the lack of concern/they deserve it mentality for the prisoners.
For a minute, I thought the comment section was brigaded by thin blue-line/maga adjacent Americans. Not a good look.
Taking the no-AC bus to work feels the same.
Why are the euro snobs so scared of air conditioning?
Its a prison not a fuckin holiday resort ffs. WGAF. Now when can we start doing medical experiments on serial killers, rapists & pedos ?
This is your reminder that your empathy is a poison clouding your judgement.
Kill your perceived notion of criminals/prisoners and look at this from a pure pragmatist angle. if a 50k air con installation prevent 10 fights and the subsequent cost of injuries to your publicly funded healthcare system then you are better off. If it reduces the rate of recidivism by even 2.5% then you are better off. if it gets them out of prison several months faster then you are better off.

Reminder that [31.2% ](https://www.prisonstudies.org/country/france) of the people currently in French prisons are in remand, meaning that they are awaiting trial.
Headline: prison
r/europe: Hi, I’m an authoritarian and psychopath
look it’s better than being homeless
