The Japanese government will promote the introduction of a system to examine and certify the reliability and safety of cybersecurity companies.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) reported on the 10th that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is considering such a system.
In May, the Japanese National Assembly passed a law on “active cyber defense” that allows cyberattacks to be prevented in advance. The law requires important infrastructure operators closely related to people’s lives to report damage in the event of a cyber attack. As a result, demand for cybersecurity is expected to increase.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry plans to include countries based on operators and countries where companies mainly store data in the specific screening criteria for the new system. It also plans to check the use of foreign software and the nationality of shareholders and executives.
After reviewing these matters, the Japanese government will grant certification to reliable companies for reference. Certification is expected to be the criterion for judgment when a company entrusts its work. In addition, government procurement tenders are expected to only target certified operators.
Nikkei explained the system, “We will examine whether it is being unfairly affected by China and other countries of concern and check its safety.”
He added that there is still a similar system called the “Information Security Service Examination Registration System”, but the limitation is to examine based on service quality. The certification system focuses on confirming the reliability of companies, including foreign influences. It also checks the possibility of information leaking to foreign countries using overseas programs.
Earlier in June, Takayuki Kobayashi, head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Economic Security Promotion Headquarters, suggested to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba that “it is necessary to secure the reliability of the business operator.”
