US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused French President Emmanuel Macron of sabotaging ceasefire negotiations between Israel and the Hamas group.

Rubio made the statement in an interview with Eternal Word Television Network, per Caliber.Az.

According to him, the ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas collapsed on the same day Macron announced France’s recognition of the State of Palestine.

Rubio said these decisions signaled to Hamas that the militant group would be rewarded for its actions. “If I were on Hamas’ side, I would basically conclude: ‘Let’s not make a ceasefire, we can be rewarded, we can claim this as a victory,’” the Secretary of State said.

He added that following France, several other countries also declared their intent to recognize Palestine if a ceasefire is not reached by September. The US called such steps “symbolic but harmful,” as they “complicate the achievement of peace.”
