France battles largest wildfire of the year so far • FRANCE 24 English

Blood red sky as giant flames light up the hills outside the French village of Riot. Firefighters working through the night to battle the blaze as residents worried of damage to their homes and the natural surroundings. It’s terrible for the wildlife, the vegetation, and for the people who are losing everything. I find it really sad. France’s largest wildfire of the year so far is currently raging through the southeastern department of OD, spreading rapidly over just 24 hours. More than 1,800 firefighters with 400 trucks have been mobilized to battle the flames, as has the country’s entire fleet of aerial water bombers. Their primary goal to save as many homes as they can, a task not always possible. This neighborhood evacuated as its inhabitants watched their houses succumb to the flames. The fire arrived very rapidly. We just had time to get the car out and within an hour the house everything had burnt. The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon. As of Thursday morning, more than 11,000 hectares had gone up in smoke. The A-9 highway linking France and Spain turned to a parking lot as authorities shut down the key artery. President Emanuel Macron took to social media to offer his support to firefighters and local officials as he urged residents to use the utmost caution. Firefighters in southern France were battling on Wednesday to control the country’s biggest wildfire so far this year, local authorities said. One person died in the village of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, and one person from the same village was missing, the Aude prefecture said. The fire has burnt down at least 25 houses. Many roads in the area are closed.

  1. Being locked close to Mediterranean Sea new system needed in region, helicopters that could react to wildfires asap from start before firefighters arrive. You need better equipment with remote access. You can have for bordering countries to cut the cost. Upgrade system due to changes, yeah it’s more work but definitely less than restoring loss. Trees don’t grow overnight and absolutely we need shade and oxygen. Evaluate your lifestyle and make smart decisions. It’s not hard. Split second.

  2. Should have done fire management and control over winter. Oh well, cant blame man made up climate change when man made dumb decisions are the reason for the fire!!
