In the early hours of Sunday, damage was caused to the historic Small Onofrio Fountain in Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

Dubrovnik-Neretva County Police have confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway into the damage to the cultural monument.

A section of the stone bench on the edge of the fountain has been broken off.

Police are currently conducting an inspection at the scene and informing the relevant department of the Ministry of Culture, namely the Conservation Department in Dubrovnik.

The Small Onofrio Fountain, a UNESCO-protected cultural monument, was built in the mid fifteenth century in a niche on the wall of the Main Guard.

It was designed by Neapolitan architect Onofrio della Cava, who also designed the Dubrovnik water supply system and the larger Onofrio Fountain.

The sculptural work on the fountain was carried out by Milanese sculptor Pietro di Martino.

The fountain underwent its most recent restoration earlier this year.
