    Imagine if Mexico invaded Guatemala and the first thing the US did was look to Europe and say, “hey! Do something about this!” Absolutely inconceivable.

  2. Unless Trump is able and willing to ramp up weapon shipments to Ukraine, I don’t see how he’s going to pressure Putin into any sort of agreement.

  5. Sadly, the EU is still buying Russian oil and gas, agricultural products and a whole pile of other stuff – although admittedly in decreasing quantities. Perversely, some EU countries are poring money into both Ukraine and Russia.

    Macron likes to strut around, but his France trades in LNG, fertilisers and nuclear products.

    But. That aside, I agree with him. For any form of peace deal, Ukraine must be involved. Furthermore, other European powers (not just the EU) need to be at the party.

    The Americans decided everything without Ukraine (and Russia for that matter), so they will keep doing it. US-bootlicking Muppets like Macron won’t change that, either.

    As long as the EU doesn’t gain independence from the US, collectively leaves NATO, builds its own defense organization, and starts having strategic autonomy from the US (and starts treating the US as the enemy that it is), absolutely nothing will get done and there will never be peace in Europe.

  13. I’m pretty sure Ukraine won’t even be discussed during their meeting. Keep in mind, Trump will not allow ANYONE in the meeting. It will be just ICC warrant Putin, his translator and Oompa Lumpa. They won’t even discuss Ukraine. Let’s start off first with The President of the States will allow a ICC warrant fugitive on American Soil.

  14. The EU is a good example of “weak men creating hard times”. This is happening on their continent, years into the war and still can’t get it together, still getting big brother’d by the unreliable US, still buying Russian oil, still can’t present a united front.

    These weak people will likely give way to more Trumpist types looking at the right wing surge, accelerating the decline of Europe.

  16. It’s unfortunately predictable how Trump is going to try and appease Putin.

    The rest of the Western world is going to have to collectively and loudly protest. Individual grumblings are going to resort in Trump making *additional* tariff threats.

    In the US, the media have done a lackluster job covering Ukraine. Having other countries protest might bring some needed attention.

  17. I have worked in boardrooms and interacted with high gov officials in both U.S. and China. It is funny on how dismissive both U.S. and China are towards the EU. Both sides thinks are Europeans are lazy and self righteous, thinking that they still matter or have power in this world. Crazy on how aligned both countries are with this perception of Europe. Absolutely no respect in terms of European technology, insane regulations and work ethic.

    China also has the additional view of Europe as American’s guard dog whereas Americans just see Europeans as irrelevant.

  23. This sounds fine…but what of the wishes of the people of Luhansk and Donetsk? What if they no longer wish to remain part of Ukraine?

    There is no question Russia has support there or they would have been beaten back by insurgent attacks behind the lines a while ago.

    I think the key here is to create a UN supervised referendum on independence for the region; this started before 2014 and will not end without incorporating the desires of the people of the Donbas in any future settlement.

  24. Right unless Ukraine is directly involved with talks this is one again TACO allowing Russia to catch a damn breather. It’s not our job USA to give other countries land away. We all know the outcome we will give Russia 2 more weeks to decide and the song and dance will continue
