Government drops order to Tory MPs to block partygate parliamentary probe

  1. ‘Tory MPs will no longer be whipped to block an investigation into whether Boris Johnson misled MPs over lockdown-breaking parties in Downing Street and Whitehall.’

  2. Someone at Tory HQ figured that even the great unwashed plebs would smell something a bit fishy in ordering a block to an investigation a month before local elections.

  3. I take it they’ve just confirmed they have the numbers they need to make sure the investigation doesn’t happen then.

  4. How have we got to the point where out government has the ability to block an investigation into their own crimes? We are sleepwalking quickly into authoritarianism and putting our fingers in our ears

  5. How to make your government appear both tyrannical and powerless in the space of just a couple of days. I’m looking forward to seeing a u-turn of the u-turn shortly. Perhaps they’ll introduce a vote to legalise lawbreaking by cabinet members, then offer a free vote, then whip the voters, then offer an ammendment to their own motion before cancelling the whole thing. It’s like taking a time machine back to 2018/19 with the strong and stable Theresa May goverment.

  6. The party whips will have worked out that they have the numbers anyway, so dropped the whip so that they can claim it’s a free vote and avoid accusations of unfair play.

  7. Clearly they have decided that Big Dog is going to get away with it, and it’s better to get this vote over with now and use it as a shield when the other fines start to become public.

Things would look a lot more ropey once it’s 6 fines, where now they can say they already investigated and the matter is closed.

  8. So glad we can trust the current government enough to believe that they are not trying to hinder an investigation into a PM that has nothing but the wealth and health of the country in his heart and mind /s

  9. All MPs who vote against an investigation should be named and shamed. If Boris didn’t break the rules he has nothing to hide. That’s what they insist for us so hold them to that standard. The sanctity of Parliament and the sovereignty of Parliament must be preserved after all.

  10. Possibly they’ve been given the nod that more fines are coming, and as a result it’s better to get this over with on the one ‘smaller’ fine, and then ‘consider it done’, than drag it out and have the probe cover all of the fines.

But maybe I’m just super cynical.

  11. You know that we have more wealth inequality now compared to the French revolution… I wonder how many ‘pleasant’ days we have of post-capitalism, considering every society has fallen before us

  12. this is why I believe they’ve made themselves untouchable…we can’t hold them account, democracy is gone

  13. When I was a kid one of my uncles explained to me that Britain was an Elective Dictatorship, because we basically had zero means to remove a government from power if it had sufficient majority. I didn’t know what the fuck he was on about and didn’t care because I was about twelve, but it makes sense now.

Credit where it’s due though. Labour have managed to hoof no small number of open goal shots into the rafters, but they’ve played a blinder here: doing the right thing will never compel most Tories, the thought of losing their seats will.

  14. Just to point this out -we don’t need a probe we know the answers from the report and police investigation done already and can come to our own clear conclusions.

  15. We put all our politicians in prison as soon as they’re elected. Don’t you?” “Why?” “It saves time.
