Range Cafe makes economic adjustment at 4 locations
Albuquerque restaurants stop serving dinner; no changes in Bernalillo, Los Lunas
The Range Cafe, a New Mexico culinary institution for 33 years, is making a big change at four of its six locations in response to economic issues that have made life difficult for restaurants nationwide. Nothing is changing at its Bernalillo and Los Lunas restaurants, which will continue serving breakfast, lunch and dinner (with only lunch and dinner in Los Lunas on weekdays). However, only breakfast and lunch will be served at its Central Avenue SE, Rio Grande Boulevard, Wyoming Boulevard NE, and Coors Boulevard NW locations.”We’re fighting so many obstacles, with just crazy price increases and labor increases,” said Matt DiGregory, co-owner of The Range Cafe. “On top of that, we’re seeing a slowed economy with tourism. We’re not getting the tourist crowd we used to get, and I think it’s just changing patterns of people not going out to dinner anymore. So we started looking at all the factors and weighing our options.”The business has had many employees for some time, but it’s become increasingly difficult to afford and find enough people to serve three meals a day at six restaurants. The uncertain economic outlook calls for pulling back, DiGregory said.”We sure hope to be here for the long run, and that’s why we made this decision,” DiGregory said. “I had a conversation with my friend John Patton, who owns Dion’s, and a comment that he made stuck with me. He said, ‘I can’t imagine life without restaurants.’ Restaurants have been around for hundreds of years, and they’ll always be here in some way, shape or form.”
