Iceland is making a major change to yellow stickers across 900 stores. Frozen food specialist Iceland Foods has become the world’s first retailer to roll out a national food waste reduction scheme in partnership with both Olio and Gander.
Iceland says shoppers across the UK will be able to find real-time discounted yellow-sticker items in over 900 of the frozen food specialist’s stores, due to new app integrations with Olio and Gander.
It is understood that the move, which follows a successful trial in Bristol and London, will allow users of the Olio app in Birmingham and throughout the West Midlands – as well as the wider UK – to be alerted to local reductions on surplus food.

Gander’s tech shows live availability of marked-down products in nearby stores, helping households save money and reduce food waste.
“Iceland has always been dedicated to tackling food waste head-on, and extending this partnership with Olio and Gander is another step towards making a real difference,” said Iceland director of prouct, process and sustainability.
“Not only does this help our customers make their money go further, but it makes a positive change for the planet too.”
It comes weeks after Iceland Foods is scaling up its partnership with food-sharing app Olio, extending the rollout of its ‘Lucky Dip’ food waste reduction initiative to more stores across the UK.
The trial, currently active in 14 Iceland stores, offers Olio users the chance to purchase a mystery bundle of at least eight reduced-to-clear items for just £2, around 75% less than the usual retail price.
“As a part of our ‘Doing It Right’ philosophy, we’re committed to reducing food waste while supporting our customers and communities,” said Iceland director of product, process and sustainability Stuart Lendrum.
“The expansion of our partnership with Olio through the Lucky Dip scheme is a great example of how we can combine innovation and sustainability to make a real difference, ensuring good food is never wasted.”
Olio co-founder and COO Saasha Celestial-One added: “Working with Iceland on Lucky Dip bags has been a wonderful addition to our already highly impactful partnership.
“We’ve loved developing another way for retailers to fight food waste through Olio, streamlining discounting and surplus redistribution into one simple system, and taking the operational burden off store colleagues. We’re looking forward to seeing where this new discounting chapter takes us next!”
