A new survey found that people in Indianapolis are almost twice as likely to have multiple jobs, when compared to the rest of the country.
INDIANAPOLIS — A new study finds that people in Indianapolis are much more likely to have side-hustles than the average American.
About 9% of workers in Indianapolis have multiple jobs. That compares to just over 5% nationwide.
Indy ranks third in the nation for workers with multiple jobs, with Milwaukee holding the top spot with just over 9% of its workers holding down several jobs. Phoenix is in 2nd place, with just 0.1% more than Indy.
The city with the lowest percentage of workers with multiple jobs is San Jose, California, where just over 1% of the workers have more than one job.
Workers with more than one job tend to be younger and get paid higher wages than workers with just one job. As you might expect, they also tend to work more hours.
“Some may need both jobs to keep the lights on or to keep food on the table, while some may be doing it to pay off their debts, build their savings or give them some extra wiggle room in their budget,” said Matt Schulz, LendingTree chief finance analyst. “While I’m sure some people’s second job is about chasing a dream or following a passion alongside their day job, most people likely have their second or third jobs out of necessity rather than choice.”
Education and health services workers are the most likely to have multiple jobs, followed by transportation and leisure industries.
Mining and information workers were the least likely, with less than 1% of workers reporting having multiple jobs.
The study was done by LendingTree by looking at the responses to the U.S. Census Bureau’s CPS May 2025 data.
