Former PVDA/PTB politician joins MR-Open VLD group in Brussels city council

  1. Yeah, it’s a real problem for PTB.

They often have this sort of individuals on their list but once they get elected they don’t want to cough the money ask of them. If I remember correctly, it’s everything above 1500€ should be donated to the party.

I saw it happened in 1000 Brussels a few times and always the same sort of elected individuals. Or they sit as independent or they switch to a classical party. They often fade away from the public eye afterwards.

    And yes, they are opportunistic.

  2. **A remarkable move: Brussels city councillor Zahour Loulaji, who sat for the PTB-PVDA until 2019, is joining the local MR-Open VLD group. She announced that on Monday at the city council.**

The Brussels MR had already mentioned Loulaji’s arrival last week on its invitation to the Bal des Libertés in June. On Monday, Loulaji confirmed her final switch in her own words at the city council.

“I have been an independent councillor for more than two years now, two years in which I have mostly listened and observed,” Zahour Loulaji said in the city council.

During this period, she said, she often spoke with local residents, but also with members of the Brussels City Council. “So I also spoke with other party groups. And now I have chosen to join a group that is close to my heart and shares my values. I would like to join the MR group.”

    **’Reducing poverty’**

Loulaji wants to reduce poverty in Brussels neighbourhoods through the MR, she said. “I have fought for solidarity all my life. We cannot let neighbourhoods be overshadowed by poverty. But over the past twenty years, I have seen more and more poverty around me,” said Loulaji.

“Many families cannot make ends meet, with catastrophic consequences for their children. I believe we should help them by teaching them to be entrepreneurs, to start their own business or association, and above all, give them confidence.”

Loulaji resigned from the PVDA group in April 2019, a few months after the Brussels City Council was installed, along with two other city councillors. Since then, she has been sitting as an independent.

Today’s move to the MR is already being met with scorn by the N-VA. “A former communist councillor is switching to the MR,” tweeted councillor Mathias Vanden Borre scornfully.

    **Not problematic**

David Weytsman, chairman of the MR, does not find it at all problematic that a councillor from the far left is now joining the liberal ranks. “We have spoken with her for a long time, also about liberalism, and we believe that Loulaji has embraced liberal values, in order to fight poverty. By the way, she had been a member of the MR for a year. It was only today that she officially announced her choice.”

  3. How does one fight poverty as a liberal? My knee-jerk reaction is that their values go counter to reducing it.

  4. Partij: ‘PTB verkozenen mogen niet meer verdienen dan gemiddelde arbeider’

Zahour Loulaji: ‘Ik omarm het liberale gedachtegoed’
