The European Union (EU) is reported to be pushing for a preliminary meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the U.S.-Russia summit to discuss the ceasefire in Ukraine on the 15th.
Citing European officials, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 11th (local time) that European leaders are pushing for a meeting with President Trump before the scheduled U.S.-Russia summit.
Through preliminary meetings, European countries will reaffirm the “red line” that Europe and Ukraine cannot accept. It also plans to ask President Trump to press Russian President Vladimir Putin to faithfully comply with the negotiations.
According to the WSJ, European countries are in the position that an immediate ceasefire, mutual territorial exchange between Russia and Ukraine, and security guarantees for Ukraine should be made in future talks.
In addition, European countries will try to persuade President Trump one last time so that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders can attend the US-Russia summit table.
Meanwhile, President Trump defined the nature of the Ukraine ceasefire talks in Alaska on the 15th as an “exploration war.” “I’m going to see the conditions now,” he said, adding, “I can say ‘good luck’ and end it, or I can make an agreement.”
