Were struggling to maintain the ban on rape. We’ve given up trying to maintain a ban on common assault. So maybe stop banning things until it actually means something?
Problem with banning things is you push it underground look at what happens when countrys try to ban prostitution when it’s legal its pretty safe and sex workers get some protections when it’s not it sex trafficking happens
I tried telling my mum this, she thinks my grey had a wonderful life at the track. I showed her videos of how they sleep, eat, and train. They aren’t taught any life skills, aren’t shown other breeds or given any chance to socialise beyond their competitors.
You think they are treated remotely well? Maybe if your dog wins 80% of its races and earns you money but then it’ll just run and run developing PTSD and injuries for a future carer to deal with.
If we stop racing, it’ll for sure become an underground activity. People also worry for the future of the breed, and I certainly don’t want them to go the way of the pug. Greyhounds are the only breed that has been unchanged since basically Egyptian times and possibly before. Seriously, there’s even a painting from the 1600s that looks exactly like my dog now.
So yeah, them racing is a fucking disgrace other than it gives them a chance to remind people how insanely fast they are. I don’t like racing, I hope anyone who breeds, owns, or attends gets hit by a car. These are intelligent and deep creatures, and I feel the same way about horse racing too (at least just with jumping). But if it wasn’t for the racing, maybe I wouldn’t have my best mate sitting beside me now.
Greyhounds can afford cocaine?! This cost of living crisis really isn’t hitting us all the same. Smh
They tried to do this in the Australian state of New South Wales.
* The ban was announced in July 2016 by the state Premier, to take effect a year later.
* At +2 months: The Premier’s approval had fallen from 61% to 39%
* At +3 months: The ban was reversed without ever taking effect. The Premier apologised.
* At +4 months: The deputy Premier and leader of the coalition party quit before he was rolled by his party.
* At +6 months: The state Premier responsible resigned from politics permanently.
Never underestimate how strong the “lobby groups” for gambling industries are.
Am I being naive here – does it have to be an all out ban? Why can’t the industry become heavily regulated, safeguards put in place etc? There’s nothing immoral about dog racing itself; it’s only how it’s currently being done that’s immoral!
People like watching dogs run, and dogs (especially greyhounds) love running. Doesn’t seem too hard to find a solution that makes everyone happy…!
whats wrong with gambling on human sports, or roulette?
That’s what don’t get about horse racing, dog tracks, cock fighting etc. Sure if you’re a medieval peasant that’s as good as it gets but we have televisions and internet and fruit machines nowadays.
I have one greyhound (I lost my other one just over a month ago which still hurts me to think about) and I’m very on the fence about greyhound racing.
On one hand, i find the whole industry very unethical, I’ve never liked animals being used for sport, but, they are bred to race, not for their looks, so they tend to be genetically healthy.
On the other, banning it will drive it underground, which will be worse for them for welfare, and the last thing i want to see is the kennel club get their inbreeding talons into the breed and set new “standards” for them
Also, April is Adopt a Greyhound month, if you’re on the lookout for a nice rescue dog, consider a greyhound, they really deserve better than the track, and you won’t regret letting one into your life
My brother-in-law has a Greyhound that came from a charity that rescues them after they ‘retire’ from racing.
I’m not a dog person but he is an incredibly gentle and chilled out dog that behaves brilliantly.
My BIL told me that when a lot of the dogs get too old to race in Ireland, they get shipped abroad to continue racing elsewhere until they die.
They’re not really looked after at all. All gambling involving animals funds systemic cruelty and I don’t support it at all.
We’re such an entitled species that we really need to use living creatures as a sport for our own entertainment. It’s fucking gross.
Sounds like not much has changed in the last 70 years, my Grandad used to work down the tracks in Scotland when he was a kid and told me that all the competitive dogs were wired up on speed etc.
Went to a greyhound meeting in Brighton on a Thursday afternoon 3 years ago there was just one bookmaker, and one person on the tote, I counted 4 people plus us 6 people in total watching it’s very run down stadium overpriced rubbery food
Another scummy activities have scummy people involved shocker!
There’s a family guy episode where Brian becomes a police sniffer dog and gets addicted to cocaine from constantly sniffing it lmao
To be fair the trainers are drugged on cocaine as well so it’s only fair.
Is greyhound racing a bit like fox hunting that was a British past time in the days of the empire?
Greyhounds are wonderful pets.
Very gentle, very calm. Quiet and clean, happy to sleep in a comfy spot all day.
They aren’t great at living alone, mind you – but that’s because they are used to lots of canine company at the tracks (they stay with their littermates much longer than pet or working dogs).
The industry is horrible. Loads of dogs just disappear around the age of 18 months, either due to injury or not having the temperament to race successfully. These dogs are known as ‘[wastage](https://www.aagr.org.uk/2020/09/07/disappearing-dogs/)’.
My boy has a very impressive pedigree (we know it from the tattoos inside his ears) but was thrown away at 18 months. He didn’t run a single race. He had 12 littermates – 8 were dumped or killed at the end of adolescence, 4 raced professionally, delaying their dumping/killing for another 2-3 years. Pre pandemic I followed the race cards of my dogs littermates. On the hottest day of 2019, a day when the RSPCA was telling everyone to keep their dogs in doors to avoid sunstroke or scalded paws on hot tarmac, one of my boy’s sisters was made to run the midday rac[e at Doncaster track. And here’s a video made on rainy Saturday night at Belle Vue track in Manchester](https://fb.watch/cxucGEDiCS/) (now closed) – how can making dogs run in weather like that be anything but abuse?
