  1. Given the state of the states, I don’t think that’s a positive thing.

  2. The EU did also lose the UK a few years ago which explains a fair drop in number.

  3. More Americans, more Russians and more Chinese is a threat to the world.

  4. If you want to stop birthrates declining, stop electing far-right parties who support billionaires (looking at you PVV and Finns) and fake Social Democrats who are actually Neoliberals (looking at you SPD), elect true working class champions who don’t blame migrants for everything that is happening, but actually solves the problems.

  5. White births are declining in the US as well. Only 19% of newborns in Cali are white.

  6. Relatedly, the EU had [less than 200k net immigrants in 2024](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SM.POP.NETM?locations=EU). The US had [2.6 million net immigrants](https://www.frbsf.org/research-and-insights/blog/sf-fed-blog/2025/07/17/updated-estimates-of-net-international-migration/) in 2024. Even though net immigration to the US is looking like it will be closer to 1 million in 2025 due to Trump’s policies, it’s still dwarfing the EU’s net immigration.

  7. Note that EU population is some 120 milion people larger, so the births per capita are way lower in Europe

  8. Land prices in Europe are way too high. Young people aren’t having families while their stuck in mum and dad’s box room or they are stretching the last few crumbs of their wages to last to payday because of rent taking almost all wages. EU countries and UK need to start passing laws on multiple ownerships. Make it so unless you are building new homes you can’t purchase a 3rd property. Overtime houses will move from portfolio back to individual or public ownership. Property will be affordable and young people will start having children again. But that won’t happen until the greedy “I’m alright” generation declines enough to lose political control

  9. Genuine question – why was the birth rate so low in the 70s in the US? Was it some sort of response to Vietnam / I’m not sending my child to get signed up in some war? Or is it economic reasons?

  10. It’s a bummer we cant make having kids more attractive overall.

  11. People have been ringing the alarm bell about Europe demography for decades.

We are entering the find out phase. I love Europe but this may be its biggest challenge for the 21st century

  12. Thats from all those abortions MRGA(make russia great again) prevented.. /S

  13. How many millions don’t exist because of the financial crisis?

  14. I am in my mid twenties, still in education and can’t afford to move out because apartments in my city have become unaffordable. Forget homeownership, I can’t even afford to dream about it. I am finishing my masters and I am already get told that I won’t find a job anyway because of AI, taxes will probably rise again because the boomers need their pensions while I will never see a cent of the money I am paying in. And then there are a myriad of other reasons like climate change, rise of fascism and religious extremism, rise of poverty that make having children just incredibly unappealing.

  15. EU is not only below America, but it also experienced a far steeper decline, which means EU is going to suffer from a MUCH worse demographic transition in the near future.

See that 6.8 million people born in 1964? They are all about to retire in a few years, and in exchange only 3.5 million people were born last year.

Compare that to 3.6 million new births in America with about 4 million soon to be retirees from the 60s.

  16. I thought all the social welfare programs in Europe made it easier to have a family?

  17. we both dont want kids but you guys just want them even less

  18. Nuts that people only a hundred years ago were having bushels of kids, now the idea of one sounds impossible

  19. If we do not stop capitalistic approach in EU we will cry in next decades that’s for sure

  20. I think this might be the final turning point taking us to full Idiocracy. American redhats screwing like rabbits.

  21. But why? If US is so bad, and EU so good in taking care of everybody?

  22. Lots of coping going on in the comments. The fact is, this is very bad for the EU and until European leaders come up with a solution, the USA will still control this continent and have even more leverage than they already do.

  23. Ending the debate once and for all that people need <insert current flavour of the month government measure> before they will consider having kids.

  24. This is a dying continent. People are making so many excuses for not having kids.

  25. The worst part about this is that the only people who have large families in the US are conservatives. The gap is significant and it’s going to have a real impact in the long term. It’s a big part of why conservatives are so determined to shut down immigration. They can win the long game if they do.

  26. Henry George speaks of this. We need to implement land value taxes to eliminate relative poverty from the continent.

  27. Better start breeding before they replace you with imports.

  28. Follow the Hungarian model. Give tax breaks for each kid, and make all income tax free for mothers after a certain time.

Make it worthwhile for young women to bear children. When they return to the workforce, they’ll get a great deal.

  29. Seriously…who in their right mind would feel 100% comfortable bringing a child into this batshit crazy world right now.

  30. So sad that the EU have a “robust” social safety net, and this doesn’t even allow us to have more kids

  31. Kids are too expensive. Like in the US me and my wife would want one today, we talked it over and she is not employed now and we can’t afford the couple of thousand that it would cost just to get medical care during the birth process. Or we just don’t go to a doc for checkups and just drive up to hospital when due date? That’s not talking about child care and everything else.

The west in general has become myopic in regards to childcare. We give so many tax benefits to companies and the rich, and other things that are short term, yet won’t invest into our own citizens. I consider it a failing of politicians and those that vote for them
