Trump wants India to stop buying Russian oil. Why is Modi saying no?

1. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been performing a tricky balancing act – maintaining close partnerships with US President Donald Trump and Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin while insisting his country is a neutral party in the Russia-Ukraine war, to the dismay of Western nations who have sanctioned Moscow. But now, it seems, Trump has lost his patience – demanding that Modi finally pick a side, and using India’s continued purchases of cheap Russian oil as leverage in his trade war.

2. Trump made it clear that he is siding with Pakistan….I don’t know why India would go out of their way to appease him.

   It isn’t like Trump is serious about protecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity either.

3. Because India is getting very cheap oil, and does not want to pick a side in this new Cold War. India is for India.

4. Given the observed behaviors of Modi, it appears there’s a pattern of alignment with authoritarians. Simultaneously, consumer prices of gasoline and diesel have remained stagnant. Therefore, the actions taken are not for the benefit of the general population, but potentially to serve specific interests, including propping up Putin and aligning
   Itself with the authoritarian world.

6. There’s a lot of countries that buy more oil from Russia than India

7. Lack of affordable alternatives. After Trump gets his orders from Putin in Alaska, he will most likely pressure Ukraine to make concessions to end the war. When the war ends one way or another, both sides will want to do business and Trump will find some excuse to roll back the tariffs after Modi strokes his ego.

8. Modi would be very unwise to do anything now before these Alaska talks

   My suspicion is they will come away with a way forward, I think Putin is ready to maybe talk about peace

9. We all know that one of the most fundamental values of capitalism is the free market. So if Washington doesn’t want India to continue buying Russian oil, it should offer a lower price instead of crying. 🤣

10. Because Putin is correct.
    This west orchestrated this war, the Kremlin was warning the west since beginning regarding the expansion of nato. USA and the western Europe could have avoided this war by just stopping the nato expansion into eastern Europe.
    And the anti russian coup in 2014, followed by crimea annexation. Then the minsk agreement to buy time for ukraine, which was revealed by the former German chancellor.

    Then again the nato expansion in 2022 and the war broke out.

    Putin has the firepower to burn the entire Ukraine multiple times without the nuclear arsenal. But he chose not to, just because he knows what the reason for this war is.

    India and any country whose diplomats and government have common sense and brave to stand against the west, support russia.

11. Trump has shown that he’s terrible at making deals and backs down at the first sign of resistance. Why would they capitulate to such a weak man? They’ll eventually give a very small concession and Trump will claim victory and move on.

13. Because the population of India is more than Europe + US and they need to do what is right by their people first. The savings go into other areas like defense, infrastructure and other things.

    The US has zero business preaching to India about buying Russian oil and “finding Russian efforts” while at the same time (1) making peace deal with Russians that would essentially hand over eastern Ukraine (Luhansk, Donetsk) to Russians without Ukrainians in the picture, (2) cozy up to a terrorist state (Pakistan) and promise them all these trade deals.

    India used to be the largest buyer of Russian arms (90%) until 2010, after which they’ve started to diversify with US, Israel, France etc (now less than 35% since 2014) but historical stockpiles need spares etc. By souring their historical relations with Russia, India will send Putin into bed with China (which already uses Pakistan as a western front to keep India busy)

14. Modi is saying “No” because the Indian population which is like 17-18 percent of the world population is poor and needs cheap energy for transportation ..the population will vote prime minister Modi out if he 1. allows American food products to affect Indian farmers OR 2. Allows American views on Russia to affect access to energy by the masses of India.
