Is it normal for coop to sell fruit that’s clearly spoilt ? Also why do they sell packs that are half empty (top right) ? Is this just happening in my area (Fribourg) or is this also common in other coop stores ?

  1. It’s common. They also sell sandwiches and meat that expires the same day for full price.

Better buy fruits directly at farmers market or Lidl and Aldi

  2. Yes. Fruits at coop suck, sometimes more sometimes less.

  3. Welcome to Switzerland. Absurdly high prices, low quality. I switched to frozen stuff, better deals.

  4. I always hand over spoiled or opened containers to the employees of the store.

  5. Went back to Coop with a spoiled avocado and they swapped no questions asked. But it’s bad regardless.

  6. Berries often spoil very quickly.
Especially if the packages have been stacked before and the mold is only in the lower ones.
Concerning the “half-empty” one: I’d assume that the individual berries in that one are heavier. They are packaged by weight.

This is not a coop specific issue. This happens at all supermarkets.

  7. “Region Ostschweiz”.

In retailer-speak it means anything east of Fribourg.

  8. it’s literally any shop. coop, migros, aldi, lidl, volg, they all got the same issue with fruits. it seems to be a problem since the pandemic, or at least i didn’t notice it before. these days i prefer buying and using the frozen ones.

  9. it’s not unheard of for berries tbh. have you tried picking some yourself? they go bad within a day or two so not surprising that some go bad in the supermarket

  10. Yep, they are shameless. I’ve brought back gone off stuff with mold all inside and they did not even remove the other ones from the shelf. They were still there days later. Zero shame or concern.

  11. In July, the last time I went in a coop store, all (I really do mean ALL) of the tomato (it’s a fruit) varieties were out of date by a few days.

  12. In aldi there are a few brands of berries which say when it was packaged (I think it’s strawberries and blueberries maybe). I had pretty good luck with those

  13. I bought a head of broccoli at Coop a month or so ago and it was infested with all these tiny black bugs. I don’t even know what they were. I still ate it, but I soaked it in water real good.

  14. Just go to Denner already.

Usually my experience with fruit and veggies is better there.

  15. Coop is quite expensive. Coop has troubles selling FMCG fast enough, so they always try to put crap at the top/front. It’s a kind of game: you agree to pay the higher price for the higher quality products, so you go to Coop. Not many are doing that, especially now when Aldi Lidl and Denner hit hard, so they are trying to play you: the loyal customer in the rush. So, not to lose that game, learn to take the LAST product from the shelf… practice daily and your money will be good spent!

Just to make it clear: they often check and it is really hard to find a product with an expired date. Even, if you go through the normal register, they may spot it and go to shelf to change it for you. But… still good even for one minute? The full price that is!

  16. Fruits easily get spoiled in hot weather.
For the hall empty packages… there are thieves grabbing some “free” fruits occasionally. Have seen one recently in Migros. He acted as it it was the most normal thing for him.

  17. can you imagine fruits spoil during the time..what do you want them to do? throw it away bevore its even bad? and the next day you guys are going to cry about food waste. at some coop (small ones) there work 2 people, there is simply no time to check every 5 minutes if there berries reached their spoiling point.

  18. Moldy fruits happen. Coop are not checking the whole stock constantly and may not have noticed a box got moldy over an afternoon. Point it to the staff.
