  1. Buy what?? Clothes…no. Electronics…no. Even many American products aren’t really “American” with tons of foreign content…and THAT IS GOOD! It reduces costs for everyone and allows centralization of certain technologies in certain countries, and everyone benefits.

  2. Buying “American” (whatever that actually means is debatable) is still twice as much as the tariffed foreign goods. Real world data points here… I just put new brakes on my car last week. Price on these foreign parts was $268 a few months ago when i checked them out pre tariffs. I paid $347 for these post tariffs. The American “equivalent” was $743.64. So no I did not buy the American parts. That’s what we’re dealing with. And that will just continue to go up.

  3. The whole “Trump wants people to buy American” is bullshit. That is not and never was the goal. It is great cover story for tariffs so it will persist.

For buy American to become a reality, an entirely different system than conservatives want would have to be implemented.

To increase trade, you only focus on industries where you have a comparitive advantage. You do NOT implement blanket tariffs, that is an entirely different objective.

  4. why would anyone voluntarily “buy american” these days?

i though am certainly not checking out where everythihng is from

haven’t clicked through.. i assumed it refers to foreigners..

  5. I’m fully against Trump. I voted for Harris.
But in this matter I’m on board with the concept.

I just bought an ebike and an NTA 8776 rated helmet, knowing that parts 100% have to come from other countries but the companies that put together and sell the products are American.

I’m fine with the fact they must get parts, chips, and machinery from our trade partners. It’s just how the world works. But I was excited to buy from two American companies.

I buy American where I can if the product is equal to or better than others, and if the price is equivalent. If those criteria aren’t met, the way this economy is, I’ll go for the one with the best price of the quality is comparable.

  6. European luxury brands are MORE attractive now that they are more expensive

  7. Has anyone been able to explain why we’re pushing tariffs before new american manufacturing factories or warehouses can be built FIRST to make sure consumers aren’t fucked?

  8. I literally do not care if something is made here. Why would we limit ourselves geographically to the best way to produce things. It’s insane

  9. This is an issue that has multiple sides to it and doesn’t fit the usual bipolar political spectrum most are familiar with

There are merits to production taking place near the point of consumption. It’s non-debateable that supply chains sprawling the entire world are terrible for the climate. Go watch some youtube videos of people driving around in the daytime in industrial areaas of the developing world to find out more about the air pollution. That doesn’t even get to the part about all the industrial waste going into the oceans.

After many years of globalization we now know that without substantial domestic manufacturing, its impossible to gainfully employ masses of people who aren’t ever going to be doing AI programming or getting a medical degree gainfully employed in jobs suitable to their abilities. Not everyone can be a union wage barista or government worker either. We are going to need manufacturing jobs or many people won’t be able to support themselves financially, including people in service industries whose jobs are derived from manufacturing activity too.

It’s one thing to import a product unique to another region of the world. It’s another for a CEO to import *everything possible to exploit foreign labor and weak foreign environmental standards just so they can buy another mega-yacht.* Globalization taken to extremes is harmful to everyone except those who own the companies and their executives. Sending every job offshore you possibly can to squeeze earnings out $50 per month Bangladeshis damages the domestic economy of first world countries. They should be encouraging economic development in those countries, which is a very different thing from long-term labor exploitation.

Those who take offense should probably do more constructive things with their time than reading reddit, like taking a class on business ethics.

  10. So this is extremely common through out history for governments that are like Trumps. Ultimately everything they do that they think will help the country ultimately hurt it. A lot of this has to do with faith in said government and said economy. Currently no one can trust what the current admin says and cant plan for the future, thus its a gamble. Which investing in itself tends to be a gamble its often an educated one…..which needs some level of prediction based on history and numbers.
