> Bruke Desalagne, 32, of no fixed address has been charged with rape on Wednesday, July 23.
What an abominable individual. The sentences for rapists in this country are far too lenient so I expect he’ll be back out terrorising the streets again in a couple of years.

The implication of raped being in quotations in the title is bothering me.

I wonder why Harrow Online chose to say ‘raped’ instead of raped.

So sad the people in this world are becoming feral and it’s scary tbh hope he gets the treatment and support he needs.
Harrowgateonline’s use of quotation marks around the word “rape” is an interesting choice.
It obfuscates the headline, nudges readers to question its very premise, introduces an element of sarcasm where it really isn’t warranted if the story in fact contains accurate reporting. “The twin towers at the World Trade Centre **’fell over’** after being hit by fuel-laden, hijacked passenger planes.”

I think this is the most temp bans I’ve ever seen in a single thread before 👀
>Another person said, “This government is a joke and a danger to society!!! Becoming a common occurrence these days…. When will you wake up!!! Bring back Margaret Thatcher.”
I’ve got to say, I’m scratching my head at this guy’s response.
How exactly does he want them to bring back *Maggie* of all people?!

Hope the man gets good support.

What a weird thing to say? Did Margaret do anything specific to combat sexual offences?
For those surprised by the use of ‘quotes’ around the word ‘raped’ this is very common in all news media but you may simply not have noticed it before.
It doesn’t imply men can’t be raped (absolutely not true never mind the wrong comment in this thread) or that the rape didn’t happen- this rape is being reported in exactly the same way a woman being raped would be which seems absolutely appropriate.
It’s simply that there is an assumption of innocent until proven guilty and whilst it may be clear that sex has taken place until there is a trial and evidence presented it may not be clear (especially not to the media) what actually happened.
If you’re not sure have a look at other rape stories and even just check out the reporting on the website linked.
If you checked the website linked you’d see this is how they commonly report crimes like this (as do many newspapers/ websites etc)
If you look at the first page of results (10 results):
– 3 uses of ‘rape’ or ‘raped in quotes (1 male victim and 2 female)
– 4 uses of ‘allegedly’ or ‘reported ’ (4 female victims)
– 3 headlines with neither (2 male victims, 2 females)
