Currently, 12 countries in the world recognize the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a country: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_relations_of_Taiwan#Full_diplomatic_relations

In your opinion, should Lithuania also take this step and recognize the Republic of China (Taiwan)? Especially with regard to human rights, which are completely disregarded by the CCP, this should be the only right step for a Western democracy, right?

  1. With regards to our own history, yes we should.
    Will we? No.

  2. What’s stopping the Germany from doing the same?

Don’t get me wrong, we absolutely should, but if we are talking freedom and human rights, the recognition should be pushed on EU level, otherwise the singular countries that do it on their own, will be extremely easy pickings for chinese foreign and economic retaliatory policies. Afterall, One China strategy is as strong and as enforcible as long as the country remains the world’s biggest manufacturer with it’s grip on international supply chains.

  3. If people of Taiwan think that they are separate from CCP, i mean China, who am I to say no.

  4. While it would be totally badass for Lithuania to do so, giving the PRC something else in common with Russia (ie poor diplomatic relations) doesn’t seem like a wise thing to do.

  5. No, because recognizing the Republic of China means you don’t recognize The People’s Republic of China.

  6. From moral point of view – yes.

    From economical – no.

  7. Didn’t they already do? That’s why China closed the embassy?

  8. They could consider doing what Latvia did in the early 1990s where both the PRC and ROC were recognised at the same time (Latvia went so far as the Prime Minister visiting the Republic of China, and the ROC had a Consulate General in Riga).

Despite Lithuania being under Chinese economic blockage the Lithuanian economy is still growing. However the political will doesn’t seem to be there for formal recognition of the Republic of China, partly because Vilnius believes Taipei didn’t do enough in return when they established quasi relations.

From a Republic of China mindset ideally it would be great for Taiwanese to have formal recognition by an actual country in europe and not just the Holy See.

As an Estonian I do hope Lithuania will break the ice here so we can follow suit, but it unlikely.

  9. This would also recognize the Republic of China 🇹🇼 as the **real, legitimate China** and the *People’s* Republic of China 🇨🇳 as fake China

    (I support this)
