Today’s Big Stories

1. Immigrant-rights advocates undertake daylong ‘community stoppage’

Immigrant-rights advocates undertook a daylong “community stoppage” Tuesday with a 24-hour boycott of various businesses, plus rallies opposing federal immigration enforcement operations.

The action, which began at midnight Tuesday, was organized by several groups, including the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles, Service Employees International Union Local 721, Central American Resource Center of Los Angeles and the Garment Worker Center.

Participants were urged to join events scheduled throughout the day and to support individuals and families affected by immigration raids.

The coalition also called for a boycott of The Home Depot, Target, Walmart and fast food restaurants.

“These corporations whether implicitly or not have allowed their facilities to be used as places where federal agents violated workers’ rights and have inflicted pain and terror in our community and families,” Jorge-Mario Cabrera, a spokesman for CHIRLA, said in an email to City News Service.

2. Overnight lane reductions coming to 405 Freeway through Sepulveda Pass

Closures of some lanes on the San Diego (405) Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass have been pushed back two weeks, Caltrans announced Tuesday.

The work was originally due to take place Aug. 8-11, but has been moved to the weekend of Aug. 22-25 instead. Caltrans did not give a reason for the change.

“The work will start at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25,” according to a Caltrans statement.

Three lanes in each direction will be closed. The closures on the northbound side of the freeway will reduce the number of lanes to three from Santa Monica Boulevard to just north of Sunset Boulevard.

3. 4 arrests after home reportedly owned by Brad Pitt was ransacked by burglars, police say

Four people have been arrested in connection with a burglary earlier this summer at a Los Angeles home reportedly owned by actor Brad Pitt, police said Tuesday.

Officers responded June 25 to a break-in at the house in LA’s Los Feliz neighborhood.

Police said at the time that suspects broke in through the front window, ransacked the home and fled with miscellaneous property.

Detectives have made four arrests, Officer Drake Madison said Tuesday. He said the suspects’ names could be released later in the day.

4. Mysterious illness affecting sea gulls in Southern California

An unknown illness is sickening and killing Southern California sea gulls, a bird rescue organization said Tuesday.

San Pedro-based International Bird Rescue says there’s been an “unusual surge” of sick and dying Western gulls along the area’s shores. As the organization scrambles to treat the affected birds, state and county agencies are investigating potential environmental toxins as the culprit.

The ailing gulls have been found on a stretch from Malibu to Redondo Beach, according to International Bird Rescue.

“Affected gulls are arriving with symptoms that include dehydration, difficulty standing, partial or complete paralysis, confusion, difficulty blinking, and, in the most severe cases, respiratory distress,” the organization said in a news release. “Some birds have been found dead on beaches. Since July 25, Bird Rescue has received 17 gulls exhibiting symptoms. Initial tests for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or simply `bird flu,’ were negative; results from more recent cases are pending.”

JD Bergeron, CEO of Bird Rescue, said his group is committed to caring for the birds. The non-profit organization is funded through donations and staffed by volunteers.
