Young Scouts took part in a major international adventure.

Scouts from Hampshire were among nearly 500 UK participants attending the 16th World Scout Moot in Portugal, a global gathering of 9,000 Scouts aged 18 to 25.

Taking part were music student Daniel Collett, engineer James Hallows, pharmacy technicians Ioanna and Steff Trifidou, and student Dee Wright.

The event began in Tejo Park, Lisbon, on July 25 and concluded in Porto on August 3.

“It’ll be exciting to meet a mixture of people.”

One part of The World Scout Moot experience includes a four-day expedition, with participants grouped alongside Scouts from other countries to explore one of 100 routes through remote regions of Portugal.

After the expedition, all attendees reunite at a camp in Ovar for cultural learning, skill development, and Scouting activities before the closing ceremony.

Ioanna said: “I went on a Scout trip to South Korea in 2023 and it made me want to experience more international adventures.

“It’s a pathway to cultural discovery.

“When I’m in Portugal I’m going to explore some local villages and really try and find out about the country and its people.”

Steff also said before the trip: “I want to meet new friends from right around the world and find out how Scouts is different in other countries – the further away the better.

“As part of the Moot, I’m on an expedition to the history of Portuguese royalty, a great opportunity to find out more about the country’s culture.”

James was attending as a volunteer.

He said: “This is the first international Scout event I am taking part in as part of the volunteer support team.

“I want to make loads of new friends from around the world, learn new skills and learn something of their cultures and have a whole load of fun.

“I am so looking forward to helping the participants have a great time, learn new skills and get the best out of the experience.”

A spokesperson Hampshire Scouts said: “Many will continue their adventure (after August 3) with the friends they have formed over the last 10 days.”
