China announces 75.8% tariffs on Canadian canola

  1. Maybe Canada will soon be able to change its 100 % tariffs about electric cars, since trump has torn apart the auto pact.

  2. Bro you would think all the people being screwed by trump would band together to trade better but…nooooo but then again BRICS has really been expanding since Trump

  3. Bold move considering we hold all of your investment properties.

  4. Canada did put 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs, so what goes around comes around.

Rock and hard place. On one hand let’s have cheap cars for everyone.

On the other hand it would decimate our auto industry. Which is probably inevitable seeing how the average cost of new vehicles in Canada is $67,000!

  5. Honestly, if this is in retaliation for BYD? I get it. It’s kind of ridiculous that we’ve decided that the only EVs Canadians can have are Teslas or any of the few American models from the legacy manufacturers. BYDs were the top-selling EV in the UK last month. The demand is there, but we’ve made a series of baffling choices on federal and provincial levels.

(In Ontario, Doug Ford scrapped existing plans for EV credits and EV chargers at GO parking lots for…reasons?)

If we drop the BYD tariffs in exchange for China dropping Canola, we’d be sending a supportive message to farmers. But it could probably look like a kick in the teeth to auto manufacturers…none of which really make consumer EVs at present.

I’d love if dropping the tariffs could come with a commitment to making them/parts of the cars in Canada, but my general understanding is that China has far eclipsed the rest of the world in terms of domestic production scale and ability (dark factories, etc.), and probably can’t/won’t outsource any part of that process.

  6. This is the worst thing to happen to the rapeseed since the rebranding! Its an outrage!

  7. If only there were someway that China could influence public opinion using bots or agents.

  8. If they changed the name back to rapeseed, Trump would like it a lot more

  9. If theres anything reddit has taught me, its that tariffs only hurt the country issuing them, so my question is, why would China do this to itself? Is Xi stupid? Is China making themselves a global pariah? Don’t they want to be friends rather than authoritarian bullies?

  10. We did it to ourselves on that one. There is no good excuse why there are still tariffs on Chinese EVs except to bolster yankee brands. Those tariffs should have been removed once Trump started on his annexation threats to collapse the Canadian economy via tariffs.

We have to diversify and decoupling from America will take time which is why we have to work with China.

  11. Can we just lower the EV tariffs to a reasonable rate already as it was only done to help the US.
Also we could incentivize building a few of the cars here or parts here.

  12. Everyone just pulling percentage numbers out of their ass now because of the US.

  13. All canola is Canadian. It stands for CANadian Oil Low Acid

  14. I feel like I’m living in the early 1930’s.

  15. If we changed our real estate laws to prevent the Vancouver area from being used as a money laundering scheme, they would change their fucking tune real quick.

  16. Carney will probably offer to drop part of the EV tariffs if China does the same for Canola oil. China buys enough of our canola oil for its tariff to hurt and Carney can be seen as supporting farmers.

  17. Let’s all just stop buying all the crap that is made in China. Look for made in Canada or if not then from a friendly country. Reuse what you have or go to a thirft store.

  18. It’s okay guys, tariffs are good, our southern neighbour told us so.

  19. Uh seems like a lot but im on olive oil, clarified unsalted cow milk butter and ghee so yeah….

  20. Remember when we were all benefiting from a shared global free market where the WTO would ensure that individual countries couldn’t ruin it for everyone with petty protectionist games that ultimately always backfire anyway?

Pepperridge Farms can’t remember because they were bankrupted by cookie tariffs, which were passed in retaliation to toothpaste tariffs, that came as an answer to underwear tariffs, which were originally instituted to offset self-sealing stem bolt tariffs…

  21. Oh my …Chinese ovations of interest make one swoon. Way to make friend, assholes.

  22. If Canada relaxes tariffs on Chinese evs, the Canadian car plants close permanently and there is no bringing that back. Sort of like the Canadian plane business.

  23. Technically all canola is Canadian. Canola literally stands for CANada Oil Low Acid, meaning it’s a kind of rapeseed developed in Canada to have low levels of erucic acid, which is bad for your heart.

  24. Trump would never tariff rape seed. It’s too close to his heart.

  25. Good. The EV tariffs are so dumb. “Oh no, cheap EVs so the planet might have a tiny chance to be saved? NO WE MUST PROTECT OUR CAR MAKERS!” If the Canadian government was smart, they would roll back the EV tariffs and work closer together with China, not only for the environment, but also to have a strong ally against USA bullying.

  26. Its fine, the food stock we replace all our export canola with will drive food prices through the floor.

Canola being the dominant crop is simply down to the fact that its easy to grow and sells really well in terms of $/unit of volume.

We’ll still grow some for domestic use, but the lowered income from canola will essentially stop the mass production of it we do now, returning us to a more balanced agricultural growth catalogue.

The transition will sting a bit, but it will be brief.

As for the $5 billion in exports we lose we can replace that by producing agricultural equipment domestically instead of importing it, honestly that would likely see our farmers benefit financially from this as well as the consumers who will see food prices drop.

Just like with the US, hurting us will only make us stronger.

  27. Hopefully this gets us to drop our stupid anti competition EV tariff.
