Wimbledon on collision course with tennis world after player ban

  1. > Our sport is proud to operate on the fundamental principles of merit and fairness, where players compete as individuals to earn their place in tournaments based on the ATP rankings,” the ATP said. “We believe that today’s unilateral decision by Wimbledon and the LTA to exclude players from Russia and Belarus from this year’s British grass-court swing is unfair and has the potential to set a damaging precedent for the game.

I think the damage was done when Russia started raping and murdering civilians in Ukraine.

  2. Considering Russia uses its athletes as propaganda it is clear we cannot allow them to be freely engaging with the global stage.

It has been suggested we set a conditional loophole that allows athletes who publicly condemn the war but I don’t know how well that would work versus total exclusion

The Russian people may suffer harshly thanks to Putin but under Putin the Ukrainian people are suffering far worse so we have to show that a global community cannot ignore war crimes.

  3. Citizenship is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. You should not discriminate based off citizenship.

  4. Damn straight.

There’s a precedent (sporting sanctions on South Africa) here, and Wimbledon considered themselves important enough to completely overlook that regardless of the wider implications to international sport.

  5. it’s worrying to see how everyone’s position on discrimination instantly changes now it’s against russians

  6. Pathetic move, can’t say I’m surprised though. The Western world is endorsing ethnic discrimination on a mass scale currently, and I dare say elements of xenophobia are emerging. I despair at the people who support such a move; targeting innocent Russians will only lead to further discord, not a resolution.

  7. Men, women and CHILDREN are fucking dying and suffering.. that is UNFAIR. Being banned from a game of fucking tennis is trivial compared to that.

  8. >being condemed by the ATP, the governing body of men’s tennis, as “unfair” and “discriminatory”.

Holy crap! A governing body with some cahones!

They potentially aren’t wrong here! I’ve been a Union rep in work in the past, so I always take a claim of discrimination with a bit of skepticism, but on this occasion it does seem like they have a good point. Banning people based solely on their nationality is potentially discriminatory, and is therefore likely covered under the Equality Act.

  9. Fuck the Russian state and anybody supporting the invasion of Ukraine.

With that said – Banning individual players, even those who openly oppose the actions of their government, simply because of their nationality, is straight up xenophobia
